George Davis in Calgary
[edit]George Davis of Alfreton played in Canada in the early 1910s and 1920s - yes the same man that played for Derby County and England (although at least one Calgary paper reported that he had played in three international matches). He played in Calgary starting in 1913 and played until at least 1924.
In 1922, at age 41, he played in the inter-provincial series when Hillhurst won the Dominion of Canada Football Championship (Connaught Cup Series). He played in the two of the seven matches - in the opening round against Nanaimo and in the Western finals against Winnipeg. Davis was already injured before the competition and re-aggravated his injury in the opening match against Nanaimo, hence the reason he was used sparingly. He did record an assist in the game against Winnipeg.
In 1924, at age 43, he played in Calgary's two inter-provincial series matches with Hillhurst against Cumberland. Davis played in both matches, but Calgary was eliminated in the two-match series.
Copies of the Connaught Cup Series match lineups / team details are available via Canada Soccer through media@canadasoccer.com.

A new book is now available in electronic form listing the 1,300+ players that played in the Connaught Series. George Davis is listed in the directory (as well as the story). https://issuu.com/canadasoccer/docs/2017_canada_soccer_connaught_series — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.95.163.248 (talk) 04:02, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
George Davis coaching
[edit]Is there a better reference / more to the story that Davis coached in Manitoba (ie - date/month)? Note - "Manitoba" was not a team (it is a province), so perhaps was it for a one-off representative all-star match? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.151.114.2 (talk) 04:19, 23 November 2016 (UTC)
This section needs clarification or perhaps a modification in writing.
SIDE NOTE - there was a George Davis cricket coach for Manitoba in the late 1920s (there is a photo included in the 1 August 1929 issue of the Winnipeg Tribune http://digitalcollections.lib.umanitoba.ca/islandora/object/uofm%3A1755138)
