Two George Carters?

[edit]

This article confuses details of two artists called George Carter. On page 263 of volume 1 of the 1903 edition of Bryan's dictionary of painters and engravers there are entries for two artists with this name. The first is said to have died in 1786, the second in 1795. As far as I could determine from all more recent sources, it is Bryan that somehow separated one artist into two. E.g. the National Library of Austrlia, gives the death of the artist who made the Captain Cook painting as 1795, not 1786 like Bryan did.[1][2]. If you have more recent evidence that there were indeed two different artists, I will of course separate the articles, but I believe that in this case Bryan was the incorrect one. I agree. I have since read the entry on Carter in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and also the one in the Dictionary of National biography published in 1886, and it definitely looks like Bryan was confused.VirtualDave 20:41, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
