General George de Symons Barrow (1864-1959) did not take part in the second Boer War
[edit]See his autobiography, The Fire of Life (Hutchinson and Co, 1942), p. 55:
" – – – The Boer War was in progress at this time. Contingents and many officers had gone to it from India and I was chafing to be there too. Lord Roberts on taking up the command had wired to India asking for a certain number of officers, whom he mentioned by name, to be sent out to him. I was on the list to command his bodyguard, a fact I learned only some time later. By the time his list was received in India Lord Curzon had decided he could not spare any more officers from India. Lord Roberts' request was refused and the knowledge that it had been made concealed from the officers concerned. Suddenly, in June, the Boxer rising in China blazed out - - - Here was a chance to recompense for the failure to get to South Africa."
