Full of jargon

[edit]

This article is full of jargon that is not accessible to the average reader. Here is a list of unknown (to this reader) terms: orogen, ok; suture, ok; thinned margin, ok; Cambrian±Eocene Tethyan shelf sequence; Tectonostratigraphic; foreland basin, ok; mollassic, ok; fluvial deposits, ok; Neogene; ok; trace of the Main Frontal Thrust; flexural foredeep; MBT, ok; Main Central Thrust (MCT); metasedimentary; allochthonous; paraautochthonous; nappes, ok; klippes; overlie, ok; low- to medium grade, ok; Proterozoic, ok; clastic, ok; Argillo-arenaceous, ok; siliciclastic, ok; anticlinorium, ok; Tibetan-Tethys Zone, ok; Kyanite-Sillimanite gneiss, ok; Pyroxenic, ok; Augen gneiss, ok; HHC, ok; kyanite- to sillimanite-grade gneisses, ok; leucogranites, ok; metapelites, ok; metagreywackes ok; protolith, ok; Tibetan-Tethys, ok

These seem to be normal terms, sorry. The abbreviations are used in the literature too: Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT), Main Boundary Thrust (MBT), Main Central Thrust (MCT), High Himalayan Crystalline units (HHC), Higher Himalayan zone (HHZ), North Himalayan Normal fault (NHNF), South Tibetan Detachment system (STDS), Tibetan Tethys Series (TSS). --Chris.urs-o (talk) 15:24, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The purpose of an encyclopedia is to make knowedge accessible to reasonably educated laypeople. Here we have an article written by a geologist, for other geologists. Unacceptable. LADave (talk) 12:49, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added links to several terms ... the beauty of Wikipedia is the ability to follow links to unknown terms and learn a bit. That said-n-done, yes the article is quite technical and could use a bit of TLC for the benefit of those lacking in geologic savvy. Vsmith (talk) 01:06, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

References

[edit]

The article has abundant Harvard ref tags, however there are no references listed for those tags. Anyone familiar with Himalayan geology willing to find 'em? Moostang created the article without the ref info, but seems to have left the building in 09. Vsmith (talk) 01:41, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The references seem normal to me. Compare to: Geology of the Himalaya#References, Commons [1] (Heim, Arnold; Gansser, Augusto (1938). Thron der Götter: Erlebnisse der ersten Schweizer Himalaja-Expedition. Zürich/Leipzig: Morgarten-Verlag. p. 270.) and (Gansser, Augusto (1964). Geology of the Himalayas. London/New York/Sydney: Wiley Interscience. p. 289.) --Chris.urs-o (talk) 05:18, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It seems the problem is worse and amounts to likely copyright infringement by copy/paste violations from various sources from the original creation in 2006 and later. Will continue investigating tomorrow (Apr. 11) if I can find time. Ask here or on my talk for details. Vsmith (talk) 03:44, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Geology of Nepal :[ The refs are good, but... --Chris.urs-o (talk) 12:02, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That seems to be a copy of our article ... rather poor show for that "University" I'd say. See this google search for a phrase from the last paragraph in our article and the Guillot pdf from that search (7th item on search list) for comparison. I did four searches on strings (see here) from the article last night and found four problematic copies. Seems the article will need to be re-written to remove this copy/paste problem. Vsmith (talk) 12:37, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And the last sentence of our article seems copied from here - see this google search. No time for more now - back later, Vsmith (talk) 12:59, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, but the ref. collection is a treasure, very nice. There are newer refs 2011, though. So it seems a work based on: Guillot (1999), Upreti (1999), Catlos (2000) and DeCelles et al. (2001). --Chris.urs-o (talk) 14:03, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
