This article actually describes genomic libraries; there is another article entitled cDNA library. The term "gene library" could cover either of these. I propose that we rename this article "Genomic library" (which already redirects here) and then make "Gene library" a short intro to libraries in general, with links to both "Genomic library" and "cDNA library". I agree that this article should be titled "Genomic library" since that's what it pertains to. However, I would suggest "DNA library" as a title for the short intro into cloning libraries given that the substrate is always DNA but the content may not necessarily be "genes" per se. --- Medical geneticist (talk) 16:34, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Good idea -- I had been thinking "Library (genetics)", but "DNA library" is clearer. We can always put in a redirect from "Gene library" to "DNA library". Agathman (talk) 16:36, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
I'll say. Now my head hurts. Let's see, so I should ask an admin to delete the old "genomic library" (which is just a redirect to "gene library"), and then move (i.e. rename) "gene library" to "genomic library". Then we can put in redirects to straighten the rest of it out. Am I right? Or does Library (biology) also need to be renamed? Agathman (talk) 02:11, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
It looks like the Library (biology) page could be expanded and reorganized with general information about library preparation, etc. and the types of libraries people use. Then the "cDNA library" and "genomic library" articles could have more specific information related to those applications. I agree with your idea about moving/renaming "gene library" to become "genomic library". I'm not sure about how to technically do this, but it might make sense to have "gene library" redirect to "Library (biology)" in the same way that "DNA library" does, since someone wanting to know about gene libraries could be looking for either cDNA or genomic libraries. Another synonym, clone library already redirects to "Library (biology)" so this seems to be the way to go. I'll have a whack at updating "Library (biology)" as it's a stub and needs expansion. --- Medical geneticist (talk) 12:40, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Okay. I'm going to wait a few days before asking again to delete the "genomic library" redirect page and move "gene library" to "genome library". I asked once, and the admin told me to get consensus on the talk page first -- if nobody else chimes in here in a few days, I guess we can claim that you and I have reached a consensus. Once that's done, I'll make sure all the appropriate redirects are set up. Then I'll have a look at "genomic library" and "cDNA library" and try to make sure they're complete.
