[edit]I have started a comprehensive rewrite of this article but I simply cannot find any useful photographs with which to illustrate the article. If anyone has any that can be used, please leave me a message on my talk page :) Meetthefeebles (talk) 15:55, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Copy-editing queries
[edit]Please revert anything I have messed up, or that you are not happy with. And please check that I have not changed any meanings or otherwise got wrong!
- I've changed some unspaced endashes to emdashes, but feel free to revert this. But if you do, make sure they have a nbsp to comply with the MoS.
- These look fine to me. Thanks for doing these; I am woeful at using dashes on wiki for some reason. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- "Its capacity of 11,800": The infobox suggests there is some discrepancy in this figure. Worth mentioning? Or at least adding the note which is in the infobox?
- I've moved the note from the infobox to the lede. If there is a way to have the same note here and in the infoxbox that would be ideal, but my poor HTML knowledge means that I can't do this. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- There is a way using the refn template; I'll see what I can do when I've got a bit further. Sarastro1 (talk) 20:44, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

- "sixth largest in the north of England": This seems a slightly underwhelming fact for the lead, and the region seems somewhat vague: where does this region begin and end?
- The North East is one of nine 'regions' which make up England. It is an official subdivision used by central government. That said, if you think it best to take this out of the lede, I can do so? Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- It's fine either way really. It's just one of those things that irritates me on the news and weather, as I'm more or less in the central North but we always seem to get left out somehow! It's all a little vague. Sarastro1 (talk) 20:47, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

- "The site is approximately 2 miles (3 km) east of Gateshead town centre and 0.5 miles (0.8 km) from the Gateshead Stadium Metro station. ": Does this belong in the lead?
- I've taken it out. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- "including two by Yelena Isinbayeva": If we are including this in the lead, it is worth giving the event for those who have never heard of her.
- Good idea. Done. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- "remained "little more than a minor track with a tiny grandstand and open terraces".": This needs in-text attribution; i.e. who said it? (According to X, the Youth Stadium remained "little more...)
- No problem, done. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- "the town of Gateshead was suffering from "the classic symptoms of decay in its inner-city areas"": Ditto.
- Again, done. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- The third paragraph of history seems to be more about Gateshead. Perhaps some re-wording may help. All but the first and parts of the last sentence could come out if necessary.
- I've removed about half of this section and merged the remainder. This info is included to give some background to the decision to effectively rebuild the youth stadium, but if you think it is too much, perhaps more can be removed? Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- Looks about right now, I think. Sarastro1 (talk) 20:44, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

- "This was the result of the industrial economy of the town having contracted to a fraction of its pre-war counterpart": The town did not have a counterpart before the war, as this suggests a different town.
- This has gone per the above comment. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- "who became "the father of Gateshead athletics"": Again, in-text attribution needed for the quote.
- Added. Meetthefeebles (talk)
- "this time by Spurtan V": by who?
- Removed as suggested Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- Do we really need the names of developers and builders? Uncomfortably like sponsorship?
- I'm not sure either way, but I've removed it just in case. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- "The corporate facilities are now open to the public.": Is nothing else open yet? Why does this need to be specified?
- It doesn't. I've removed it. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- "but as of summer 2012, the sports village proposals remain at a development stage.": Needs a ref.
- This one is a problem. I've spent several days trying to find a reference to support this but I simply can't. The difficulty is that I am trying to 'prove a negative'; what has happened is that there has been no progress at all on the proposal since the consultation and no further bids have been received, but the Council is understandably less than keen on publicising this and so it is very difficult to verify. This difficulty is that I will probably have to remove the sentence as I cannot verify it but this will lead to someone at FAC asking why I have just stopped this section in 2011/what has happened since etc. Any suggestions? Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- Tricky one. My instinct is to cut it, and if anyone asks just explain why there is nothing further. Or just hope someone publishes something saying that nothing is going on! I think the lack of a reference would be a bigger problem than the lack of information at FAC. Sarastro1 (talk) 20:44, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've cut it. If the rather abrupt end is brought up at FAC, then so be it; I cannot verify the unverifiable... :( Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:22, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Read down to the end of the history section so far. More to follow. Sarastro1 (talk) 21:07, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for these; it is exactly what is required. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
More comments
[edit]- "four stands of red seats": Is there a significance to the colour? If so, maybe worth explaining. Sarastro1 (talk) 20:47, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- There is no significance so far as I am aware. I'll take 'red' out. Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:16, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- The names of the stands look a little bare, but I'm not sure if there is a standard way of denoting them. "East Stand" and East Stand are both unconvincing in my view. Maybe better left alone?
- Looking at the Old Trafford article which is a FA, the stands seem not to be marked in any particular way, which would lead me to presume that they be left alone? Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:19, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- "A bespoke design": Bespoke? Is there a significance to this?
- "It is a polymer synthetic tartan track track": Something a little wrong here, with the repetition of "track", but I don't know enough to fix it. Is the tartan tract the polymer synthetic thing or is it something else.
- It should just say tartan track. Fixed Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:16, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- Are there separate floodlights for the inner track, or are these the same as the floodlights mentioned in the previous sentence? If so, perhaps this could be merged or the mention of floodlights taken from the inner track sentence.
- "When used for the latter, the pitch diameter is ...": Is the pitch a circle? If not, perhaps this is not the correct word to use.
- Good spot; it should be 'dimensions'. Changed. Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:16, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- "The stadium has facilities to host all standard field events.": Is this necessary, as we seem to have outlined these events?
- Agreed, there is a needless repetition there. Gone. Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:16, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- "but its operation proved problematic": Why?
- I've added 'mechanical' as clarification? Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:16, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- I took out a few more names of firms to avoid sponsorship! I've also changed a few words for some variety, but please check they are accurate as I'm guessing slightly.
Down to end of Structure section now. More to follow. Sarastro1 (talk) 21:10, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
More: Down to third paragraph of "Athletics". Sarastro1 (talk) 22:40, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
- "According to its sponsors, the highlight of this meet was the team three-mile race, won by the Blackpool and Fylde Athletic club and whose prize was a gold tankard": Important? Or just sponsors trying to sell their event? Either way, it should not be "whose" which should only be used for a person. Perhaps "the prize for which was".
- I think it can stay; the highlight of the first major meet strikes me as possibly important enough, though I've made a wording change as suggested. Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:16, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- "and the proximity to the AAA Championships": Proximity in time or space?
- Time. I've made some small changes to indicate this. Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:16, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- "the event attracted several world-class athletes from New Zealand": Sounds odd. Maybe just "several athletes from New Zealand" and leave the reader to work out their class from their credentials in the next sentence.
- No problem. Done. Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:16, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- "Foster kept his earlier promise": Perhaps remind the reader what this promise was as it was earlier in the article. Sarastro1 (talk) 22:40, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
Most of these are fairly straightforward and have been amended as suggested. Any more for any more? :) Meetthefeebles (talk) 23:16, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Final comments
[edit]- "The meet was also notable for the return to competition of Dwain Chambers after his ban for using performance enhancing drugs": Is this notable enough to include?
- I think so - Chambers has been one of the most recognisable and controversial figures in UK athletics for the last decade or so.
- "Edwards was a member of the club when he set his record mark in winning gold at the 1995 World Championships in Helsinki; he held his membership when winning Olympic gold at the 2000 Sydney Games and a second world title a year later in Edmonton.": Is there a reason we need to say he was a member in 1995 and "held" his membership in 2000. Why not just say he was a member in 1995 and 2000?
- Indeed. Changed. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:23, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- A few quotes are unattributed in the text in the later sections; particularly on the football and Rugby League club.
- The quotes have now been attributed to the writers. Meetthefeebles (talk) 11:23, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- Not too sure about "incarnation". I've removed one example, but didn't want to do it for any others.
- Did some more copy-editing but otherwise looks good. Sarastro1 (talk) 20:46, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
