"Application" or "Software"?

Gatekeeper, as far as I know, isn't an app you launch from /Applications; my guess is that it's run from Launch Services, just as the quarantine dialog popped up in Lion and Snow Leopard (and possibly Leopard, I forget) for newly-downloaded applications is. I think "Gatekeeper (software)" would be more appropriate. Guy Harris (talk) 19:33, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Classic OS Gatekeeper

It should be mentioned that back in the 1990s there was a third party extension for the MacOS by Chris Johnson (the maintainer of University of Texas at Austin Computation Center's Macintosh archive) also called GaCtekeeper which was "a program designed to continuously monitor the operation of your Macintosh, watching for operations that are commonly carried out by viruses as they try to propagate. When Gatekeeper detects an infection attempt it will automatically stop the attempt, almost before it's started.

Gatekeeper also includes the ability to automatically detect and remove certain particularly aggressive viruses. This is done continuously in an on-the-fly fashion which will never leaving you waiting for a scan to complete, unlike some of the commercial products of this kind." - Gatekeeper information page November 1993

One of those little tidbits of Mac history and it was somewhat notable for the time appearing in TidBITS on occasion (such as in New Virus, Updates Announced 07 Mar 1994 and by the author 25 Jan 1993--BruceGrubb (talk) 03:53, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

Merger proposal

I propose that File Quarantine be merged into Gatekeeper (macOS). File Quarantine is currently almost a stub and has very little substance. Given that Gatekeeper pretty much covers the same ground and is the bigger topic to begin with, I think that it would make more sense to redirect File Quarantine to this article and simply flesh the part about the extended file attribute and the “known-malware list" a bit out.–Totie (talk) 15:05, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
