Reads like a tourist brochure - and copied from one!
[edit]Two problems with this article. It reads like a tourist brochure. Perhaps because large pieces were copied from the NYC visitors guide, the first article in the reference list. Second, its blatantly POV in pieces: "The mob helped bump off a once vibrant industry." I cleanup up some, but a lot more work needs to be done. It should be possible to write about a neighborhood in an objective, original neutral point-of-view manner. Crunch 02:09, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- Crunch, although I appreciate your comments and edits (and if you have more pls help make the article better), it is not fair to say "large pieces were copied from the NYC visitors guide" when in fact only one sentence was borrowed from that source. No doubt the article can be improved, but quite a bit of work did go into getting it this far - as can be seen from the list of references. Have a look at what the page looked like previously. Also, there are many sources for the mob's influence on this neighborhood, but I accept that perhaps that section could be written in a more neutral tone. Thanks. -- San 15:38, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
- Fair enough, San. My main concern is with the POV-ness of the article, not that it's copied from the tourist brochure. For example:
- "From the industry's most famous designers to its most promising entrepreneurs, fashion makers locate their businesses here, taking advantage of the city's unlimited creative resources." (hyperbole)
- "the United Hebrew Trades union asked Lepke Buchalter and his Jewish and Italian gangster friends..." (friend used incorrectly)
- "Factories and showrooms are increasingly becoming condos and Starbucks." ("condos and Starbucks" used to generalize in a way to mean, perhaps "high value real estate and chain retail." And, then, if that's the case, please explain the significane of that in the context of the article)
These are just some examples. Crunch 16:29, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
I chanced upon this article researching functional zoning; I was about to propose the alteration of exactly the same phrases you've suggested. I was most alarmed by just how much it read like an advertisement.
My support on fixing it.

Requested move

The result of the proposal was was no consensus for district; consensus for store, but this has been moved anyway. - Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 20:28, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
The store (shop) is borderline AfD material and far less notable than the Manhattan district. The target name format for Garment District matches that of other neighborhoods listed at Template:Manhattan.

- Oppose rename of Garment District, Manhattan as the name is not sufficiently unique to justify dropping the Manhattan qualifier. Support rename of store. Alansohn (talk) 05:49, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
- Comment. Clearly the store is not the primary use and I moved it. With very little digging, you can find many areas that are called Garment District. While the one if NY is the best know, is it the primary usage? Vegaswikian (talk) 07:32, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
- Vegaswikian has put the nail in the coffin on this one. The move of the store to Garment District (store) was completed, as appropriate, given that the store is not the most common usage of the term. Garment District has justifiably been turned into a disambiguation page, including other garment districts outside of Manhattan. There seems little reason to pursue this further. Alansohn (talk) 13:23, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose NY Manhattan removal, Support store rename. There are garment districts in many cities. 132.205.44.5 (talk) 19:57, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose for the district. No one has provided clear and convincing evidence that there is a primary use here. Taking that, the dab page needs to be at the main name space. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:34, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Removal of Garment Center Online - www.garmentcenteronline.com
[edit]Hi,
I added the web directory of www.garmentcenteronline.com in the links section and somehow it got removed. I want to appeal this decision since the web directory contains listings of businesses located in the NYC Garment District. Another source of businesses, Fashion Center link is available. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.100.172.23 (talk) 20:02, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, removed those. See WP:SPAM. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 21:24, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
