Gang of Eight and fiscal cliff
[edit]This article links to the fiscal cliff article because there was a Gang of Eight mentioned in the United States fiscal cliff article. It is a different Gang of Eight.[1] Because of the number of spending cuts and tax changes, at least half a dozen committees, such as the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance committees, might want to weigh in on the bill.[1] The fiscall cliff Gang of Eight is composed of Democratic Whip Richard J. Durbin D-Il., Finance Committee member Tom Coburn, R-Okla., Budget Committee Chair Kent Conrad, D-N.D., Sen. Michael F. Bennet, D-Colo., Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-Va., Finance member Mike Crapo, R-Idaho., Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., and Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb. I removed the Wiki link. Geraldshields11 (talk) 15:29, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

When?
[edit]As of the opening of the 113th Congress. All members listed still serve in their roles (Boehner, Pelosi, Reid, McConnell and the chairs and ranking members of the Intel. Cmtes). 74.69.121.132 (talk) 10:09, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

President reporting only to Gang of 8
[edit]I am going to remove the first of the two "unsourced" notations in the lead section of the article. I am referring specifically to the part about the President not needing to report covert actions to anyone other than the Gang of 8, under extraordinary circumstances. The unsourced tag says that that is not supported in the body of the reference. It is though, or perhaps it is now. Specifically, for U.S. 50 Section 413(c):
- (1) The President shall ensure that any finding... shall be reported in writing to the congressional intelligence committees as soon as possible after such approval and before the initiation of the covert action authorized by the finding, except as otherwise provided in paragraph (2) and paragraph (3).
- (2) If the President determines that it is essential to limit access to the finding to meet extraordinary circumstances affecting vital interests of the United States, the finding may be reported to the chairmen and ranking minority members of the congressional intelligence committees, the Speaker and minority leader of the House of Representatives, the majority and minority leaders of the Senate [the Gang of 8] and such other member or members of the congressional leadership as may be included by the President.
Emphasis mine.
Note that it continues:
- (3) Whenever a finding is not reported... the President shall fully inform the congressional intelligence committees in a timely fashion and shall provide a statement of the reasons for not giving prior notice. ... (4)...
- (5)(A) When access to a finding... is limited to the Members of Congress specified in paragraph (2), a written statement of the reasons for limiting such access shall also be provided. (B) Not later than 180 days after... the President shall ensure that—
- (i) all members of the congressional intelligence committees are provided access to the finding or notification; or
- (ii) a statement of reasons that it is essential to continue to limit access to such finding or such notification to meet extraordinary circumstances affecting vital interests of the United States is submitted to the Members of Congress specified in paragraph (2).
The idea seems to be that it cannot go on indefinitely, but rather, that the President needs to tell the Congressional Intelligence Committees within 6 months, if he had decided to only inform the Gang of 8 about covert actions. --FeralOink (talk) 05:48, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
The West Wing
[edit]I believe in of the Season 5 episodes where Glen Allen Walken was Acting President, there was a press conference where a reporter mentioned that Walken as Speaker was briefed on the assassination of the Kumari defense minister. So the note is inaccurate. 66.67.32.161 (talk) 23:20, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
