While this is in fact a useless disambiguation page, there are some links here, most of which should be to Mohandas Gandhi. The only legitimate article to be here would be the movie. I will place a stub here for that movie, and direct all the other links to the right place. Jeronimo

Why not move the movie to Gandhi (movie)? --Jiang

Can someone post whether or not Feroze Gandhi is related to Mahatma Gandhi, or do they just have the same last name? --Bryan

Hey Jeronimo: If you don't like it, don't look at it! Gandhi was a great political leader. He's one of the only people I know who's gone on a hunger strike for his cause. Juicyboy 325.

All of the "What links here" pages intend to link to Mahatma Gandhi. Any page that is looking for a different 'Gandhi' uses that persons full name. Therefore I turned this page into a redirect and moved its contents to Gandhi (disambiguation). I will now put a link to that page on the Mahatma's page. Seabhcán 10:52, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

It seems to difficult to find Indira Gandhi, who is highly notable, far motre so than many iof the people here, so I propose to change this. I would also like to see Gandhi redirected here. Thanks, SqueakBox 19:13, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree on the redirection. Jay (talk) 10:13, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gandhi (disambiguation)Gandhi – While Mahatma Gandhi is no doubt a legendary figure in world politics, it is hard to say he's the overwhelming topic of the name “Gandhi” to qualify for WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT. Two former Indian Prime Ministers also bared this surname, along with some very notable and contemporary politicians, meaning such there are also differing usages in contemporary times.
According to wmcloud for the past 30 days, Mahatma Gandhi has gotten around 305,000 views. Rahul Gandhi around 187,000, Indira 178,000, Rajiv 91,000, Feroze 88,000 and Sonia 65,000 among others. This shows that even though Mahatma Gandhi is a likely subject when looking up Gandhi, it is not the primary topic which views and notability are significantly and definitively ahead of all other topics combined. A quick look on the “news’’ section on Google with the term Gandhi appears to be also primarily about other Gandhis such as Rahul instead of Mahatma.
For the reasons above, it is in my belief that the term "Gandhi" should be the disambiguation page instead of redirecting to Mahatma. Zinderboff(talk) 21:14, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose move. The rationale from 2005 (that "Gandhi" alone always refers to Mohandas) still stands. O.N.R. (talk) 21:40, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose This longer-term pageviews chart shows 46.8% of all going to the Mahatma – not overwhelming by any stretch but still close the sum of all others. However, mixed pageviews are a relatively weak argument when the long-term significance is otherwise clear: the first pages of academic search engines like Google Scholar/Books for gandhi are very predictably entirely for the Mahatma. • Oppose. Very clear primary redirect per long-term significance. Unqualified, "Gandhi" almost invariably refers to the Mahatma. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:45, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per above. 162 etc. (talk) 15:49, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. There's no need to change the title. Everyone knows 'Gandhi' means Mahatma Gandhi. Waqar💬 19:11, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is somewhat suspicious that there's just so much interest in the other people named Gandhi - it could be because a significant contingent of people like to read about the family of the person of interest, or biographies in general, or because of the ambiguity, or some other reason.
With regard to the clickstreams from the primary topic destination to the hatnote destination, we can also compare their general traffic, by looking at all-time monthly views of both. The trend seems to be indicating that the ambiguous part of the traffic is growing in proportion. We used to be in the presumably safe territory of e.g. about 5 : 1, so close to ~80% for the primary topic, a few years back. Nowadays it's less than e.g. 3 : 1, so less than ~60% for the primary topic.
The identifiable clickstream ratios for the hatnote and the redirect views are 698 : 2330 (~30%), 923 : 2510 (~37%), 812 : 2355 (~35%) so they're basically matching the overall traffic trend. So we know that between 63 and 70% readers either stayed (which would be good, they either expectedly or unexpectedly absorbed some knowledge), or left without clicking (which would be bad, if they just went back to e.g. their search engine, that's a complete failure of our navigation).
From other examples, we know that this is borderline territory. Presenting a list to the readers as an experiment so we can more accurately measure their interest would make sense. (Support) --Joy (talk) 08:53, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
