possible citation for Lugh and concilia precedents
[edit]It's from early work on Imperial Cult in Britain, by Fishwick (details at link) - available at jstor, to which I've no subscription. I had to transcribe the facsimile:
"The old festival of Lug with his eisteddfod at Lugdunum provided an ideal foundation on which to establish the Roman official religion; and it was an obvious step to reconstitute under Imperial control the traditional annual concilium of the Gallic tribes (cf Caesar B.G. 4.6.5., [et al])." - [1].
Against this earlier statement (which seems a well-informed speculation as far as I can tell), Fishwick's later evaluations seem distinctly cagey, perhaps because there's no firm evidence for Lugh at Lugdunum apart from the name. What d'you think?
I found nothing firmer, but there are lots of sites with names like pagangoatlove or celticsunrise, telling you how to have a rollicking good Lughnasa. As if you didn't already know. Haploidavey (talk) 20:46, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
