Episode Name

[edit]

Is a parody of the band Funeral For A Friend. Worth mentioning.

--- (reply) - To me, it seems more likely that it is a parody of the band name as opposed to the Elton John song. The Simpson's usually take jibes at popular culture so I think it more likely to be aimed at a modern band than a classic song.

Eugenespeed (talk) 15:17, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, in the DVD commentary for one of the season 10 episodes (most likely the The Sweetest Apu) the writers mention that there is a parody of an Elton John song in the upcoming season (which at the time would have been season 19), then say "Funeral for a Friend". It's a tad confusing because some interpreted it as meaning that Elton John himself would be in this episode. -- Scorpion0422 15:23, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've not actually seen any of the DVD's since the second one! I'll shut up now

Eugenespeed (talk) 15:12, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Elton John connection was the first that came to mind for me due to Krusty playing and singing new words to Elton's tune "Candle In The Wind" at Bob's funeral - in the same way that Elton himself did at Princess Diana's funeral. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Saint Nicholas (talkcontribs) 23:46, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Coffin line

[edit]

I think this is important to be added to the article but someone said it isn't a cultural reference.

"Matt Groening stated that in The Simpsons Movie there was supposed to be a joke where Homer was supposed to say "Now Marge, he has to get over his fear of coffins sometime. This was scrapped at the last minute due to time issues. Groening cited it as one of his favourite gags, so opted to put it in an episode instead." Jay794 (talk) 18:22, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If there is a source for it, it could go in a production section. -- Scorpion0422 18:23, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The only source I have is an interview that Groening did on Richard and Judy, a UK tv show. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jay794 (talkcontribs) 19:38, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

By 2 years?

[edit]

Bart stated that he was the oldest kid in his class by 2 years. If he's suppose to be a 4th Grader, shouldn't he be 12. I know, it doesn't make a lick-a sence, but hey, just bringin' it out. SoundPound500000 5:36 PM —Preceding comment was added at 23:39, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Exploding Laptop Reference

[edit]

I think the exploding laptop/notebook refers to the happenings a couple of months ago with the Notebook Batteries from Sony, in which they caused potential danger.

IGN

[edit]

why do you mention that guy from IGN? He doesn't make a lot of sense most of the times. This is the best episode (which doesn't mean it's good) in the dreadful season. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.95.205.179 (talk) 13:02, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The problem was in the manufacturing proccess of the cells. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr.prozac (talkcontribs) 06:39, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia mention

[edit]

It wasn't a reference, it was a mention. We don't put mentions in cultural references sections, just lengthy parodies and songs. Just because this happens to be Wikipedia, it doesn't make it any more notable. -- Scorpion0422 18:12, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nearly half of the references on the page now are not "lengthy parodies or songs." Is this standard about "mentions" versus "references" spelled out somewhere so I can look at it, when was consensus reached about this? -- Diletante (talk) 18:24, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
WP:NOR and WP:RS go against cultural references sections. We try to meet the guideline halway by limiting these sections to about 5 or 6 of the more major ones. As well, there is no source. The sections usually end up being huge masses of speculation and NN stuff, so we try to head it off early be limiting the number used after the first airing. For an example of a good CR section, see A Streetcar Named Marge. -- Scorpion0422 18:35, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Once more, for the people that either haven't seen the episode or haven't seen the JFK funeral: this is the link you follow President John F. Kennedy for the pic of the son of JFK saluting his fathers coffin. And now if you have seen the episode you will realize that JFK Jr. and Mr. Teeny are wearing the same blue dress with 4 buttons (a better image is here http://www.unctv.org/pressroom/jfk/images/AMEX3yearoldJFKjrSalutes.jpg ) and are both saluting the coffin. "It needs a proper source." what a joke is that - this is the most obvious cultural reference in the entire episode! so in it goes and in it stays. --noclador 21:20, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you think proper sourcing is a joke, then you need to read up on policy. I suggest reading WP:RS first, then WP:NOR. By the way, we normally do not note 2 second jokes, no matter how obvious they may seem. -- Scorpion0422 21:25, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adverts

[edit]

I've re-uped the list of adverts; not cultural references but of general interest to anyone who watches the episode. I've stuck them in a trivia section for now until if/when they can be worked in or not. --Jw2034 21:41, 20 December 2007 (GMT)

Trivia

[edit]

'This guideline does not suggest removing trivia sections, or moving them to the talk page. - If information is otherwise suitable, it is better that it be poorly presented than not presented at all.'trivia

As per WP Trivia 'guidance' i've replaced the trivia section into the article for now; it is interesting and suitable infomation comparable to relevance and scope to 'Cultural References'; furthermore it is clearly sourced and verified via the episode links themselves. This sort of information should stay for such episodes (explicitly as Trivia) until it can be included in a better way or the grand debate on Wikipedia trivia actually comes up with a solution! --Jw2034 23:35, 21 December 2007 (GMT)

The stuff really doesn't belong. It is simply cruft, with no real world context. The guideline doesn't suggest the mass removal of trivia, but it also tries to stop the addition of trivia. -- Scorpion0422 23:45, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

True, it is probably cruft, but even as a casual viewer I was intrigued at what was actually flicked through. I wouldnt agree that real world context is a requirement - references back to an earlier work of fiction in a book series for example may be explicitly necesary in some cases. Unfortunately, the aims of the trivia guideline doesnt fit the practice in most cases(ie - if it says trivia, kill it!). Will leave a triv section out for now. --Jw2034 00:03, 21 December 2007 (GMT)

Hi! I think this should be in subsection 'Cultural References' of the article because The Simpsons are part of the common culture in the same way Frasier or Sesame Street (for example) are ... Emiliegue (talk) 01:22, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Error

[edit]

I was watching the episode, and right before Sideshow Bob says something about Bart tormenting people whilst in court, while his father is on the stand, it cuts to the people in the audience and Sideshow Bobs father appears in the audience too, despite the fact he's at the witness stand. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.49.206.38 (talk) 01:50, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok? We don't list minor errors like that though Ctjf83Talk 02:09, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
