Talk:Fruiting body
I agree, the two articles should be merged, or perhaps added to the definition of mushroom, as part of a structure sub section.
- Fruiting body should have its own article - anything from a microscopic conidium to a large mushroom can be called a "fruiting body", as can fungus-like structures formed by slime molds and myxobacteria. A "mushroom" is simply a blanket term for a fungal fruiting body large enough to be seen by the naked eye. Peter G Werner 04:00, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Hello Peter or others.
I think it is a good thing for one article to define several related terms (example: Basidiocarp redirects to Fruiting body), but I think that in that case the destination article should always mention the redirected name, so that readers can see that they have been redirected to the right place. So I added references to Badidiocarp & Ascocarp in Fruiting body.
I would like to move the section on 'The Ascocarp' (with definitions of Perithecium, Apothecium, etc.) from Ascomycota to Ascocarp. But I suppose now you would prefer it under Fruiting body. It seems to me that it might be better to keep all these technical definitions, which probably have a limited interest, segregated under Ascocarp with a link from Fruiting body, but if you like I could move the information directly to a subsection of Fruiting body called "Classification of Ascocarps" or something. Then it would be obvious that we lack "Classification of Basidiocarps" etc. What do you think?

- I think that "Ascocarp" is a big enough subject that it deserves its own page, even if its kind of a small page now. Eventually it needs to be expanded to explain variations such as an apothecium, cleistothecium, etc. in more detail, plus how the overall shape of ascocarps is related to the way that asci release spores. If you want to merge ascocarp, it should be seen as a temporary thing, until the section on ascocarps gets large enough to be broken out into its own article. The same should be true of "Basidiocarp", which right now simply redirects to "Fruiting body" Peter G Werner 00:40, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- I agree Ascocarp should be retained and I have started to move information from Ascomycota.Strobilomyces 19:17, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
- Since this consensus is pretty clear, I am going to remove the merge tag from the ascocarp article. Debivort 02:22, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
