Selection of news stories
[edit]Starting a selection of news stories here to pick out some new facts for the article:
- French vow to keep memory of war dead alive - About 400 people attended, nice quotes from French officials, something on costs (in Australian dollars): "The Australian and British governments have each budgeted more than $6.2m for the project, while the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is spending $2.3m on the new cemetery."
Lots more articles like that. Carcharoth (talk) 06:50, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Photo
[edit]I've also asked our colleagues at frwiki if they can get us a photo: fr:Wikipédia:Atelier photographique/Objets non communs#Nouvelle cimetière militaire à Fromelles (FR-59). Physchim62 (talk) 14:29, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- If you have a scout around the Great War Forum you'll see there's a sub-forum specifically dedicated to Fromelles - quite a few pictures have been posted tehre recently, it might be possible to approach those who have taken them and ask they would be prepared to release any of the photos under a suitable licence. For pictures, may need to ask Flickr users. Try asking other Wikipedians as well. Try to get general shot of cemetery, and one of January 30 speeches and one of burial.
There is also a Fromelles discussion group:

The first new Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery for more than 50 years?
[edit]I would never just amend this fine article on such a sensitive subject. However the statement that this is the first new CWGC commission cemetery for 50 years seems to be at odds with the article on the Blue Beach Military Cemetery at San Carlos which states that "In 1982, at the request of the Ministry of Defence, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission undertook the design and construction of a cemetery and memorial. (talk) 13:28, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
- Thank-you for pointing that out. I've taken another look at the sources (two BBC News articles) and amended the sentence. However, the CWGC sources, here and here do call it the first cemetery in 50 years, so I'm not sure whether the Blue Beach Military Cemetery at San Carlos is a CWGC cemetery or not. It was designed and constructed by them, but might not be maintained by them and might not have been funded by them. It is not listed on their Debt of Honour database. The CWGC remit is the Commonwealth military dead of the World Wars and the Commonwealth civilian dead of World War II. So possibly the qualifier I've just added makes no sense and a footnote may be needed to explain things further. See also the reply made here (which I've only just noticed).
