Rerated the article from Start to C-class
[edit]This article was rated as Start class in early 2007, when the article was quite short. Much has since been imported from the "exzellent ausgezeichneter" article from the German Wikipedia and it is now obviously of C-class quality. For promotion to B-class, it would need considerably more inline references and, in my opinion, have its History section expanded further. "Famous Fribourgeois" is NOT English and neither for byspell somesuch as: 'Famous Madrileño' nor 'Friburgeño'
[edit]I reckon (yet again) Francophones spiking English-speaking wikis. If I can, I will delete the misheading to something like: Wellknown Freiburg Townfolk — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.71.30.230 (talk) 15:06, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
- reverted for two reasons: Freiburg is not the name of the page, and Townsfolk is even worse that current Fribourgeois. IdreamofJeanie (talk) 15:14, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
Article portrays a bilingual city as (almost) exclusively French-speaking
[edit]This article needs re-working. Fribourg/Freiburg is a bilingual city but that is not really reflected in the article. Even the monolingual title is problematic and in violation of Swiss norms (maps, street signage, train stations, etc). Where references to other languages exist, German is often tossed in with every other language in Switzerland in addition to English, in an attempt to trivialize the German language's historic and ongoing presence in the city, in addition to the city's founding by German-speakers. Given that linguistic issues in Fribourg/Freiburg include a problematic history of discrimination and struggles to maintain fairness and bilingualism, this is troubling. Udibi (talk) 15:47, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
- Did you read the article's section on language? It seems even-handed to me. That said, it would be good to have a source for the assertion that German-speakers refer to the city as "Fribourg". I seem to remember hearing that done in German -- with the "g" pronounced, but I can't be sure. In the admittedly brief time I spent there, I noted the complex bilingual aspect of the city and its surroundings, but did not perceive any discrimination. The staff at the beer bar I went to spoke French, while at the nearby restaurant German was the house language. For me, it made the visit especially interesting. Still, I don't deny that it's a complex issue there, at least politically. Note: The article title may not be in keeping with how things are done in Switzerland, but I think "in violation" is a bit strong, as this is the English Wikipedia.
