Improving the article

[edit]

A Cassette is hardly a BMX-specific part. This should probably be deleted. Ducttapeandzipties 02:55, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its nice to see so many people adding to the article - maybe we could get it up to Featured Article status one day. It needs a lot of work though; I'd like to note some things;

  1. Citations. Citations are really important. BMX Magazines are fine, I think, and there's plenty of those around. Some stuff can't be referenced - we all know what a tailwhip is, but theres not many 'reliable' sources we could use to say what it is. But the other stuff; rider histories, dates, commentaries, etc, should be referenced where possible.
  2. Photos. Hopefully, you guys are all riders. It'd be nice to get pictures of some of these tricks if you can do them. Scanning photos from magazines, or copying them from websites isn't allowed, so you must take the photos yourselves. Take one good enough, you could make it a Featured Picture and get it on the front page.
  3. Improving the article. I think we need to cut down the list of "Legendary Freestylers". Such a list is problematic on wikipedia, as it is so subjective. Theres quite a few riders that we would all agree belong on that list and who need to be noted, such as Matt Hoffman, Dave Mirra, Dennis McCoy, Van Homan, etc. We need references as reasoning for them being there. Is there a Mag that has done a list of the most influential riders? We could use that as a base.

Thats just a start. --Iorek85 02:23, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Creating Tricks page

[edit]

Tricks are many. I think that there should be separate "BMX Freestyle Tricks" page. --BMXrace.lv 19:27, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

should street be merged with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Riding? 84.64.75.186 19:09, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We really need to keep the number of tricks down. Please, only the basic tricks that make up more complex tricks; Backflip is fine, but double blackflip no hander isn't, because it's just a combination of those moves. Same for variations of the same trick - a footjam is a footjam no matter what side. There are literally millions of moves that can be done, and we can't list them all. Iorek85 06:35, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. If we were to list every variation and combination of every move, it'd be endless. I don't mean to knock on whoever included it, but as an example, having the "Einstein flip" as the 360 backflip is somewhat unnecessary. Personally I didn't even know that was the name for a 360 backflip. Almost everyone everywhere in BMX refers to a 360 backflip as that exactly, so I feel having "Einstein flip" in there is somewhat redundant. As opposed to say, the flair, for example. It's a 180 backflip, everyone knows that, but it's also most commonly known as a flair, hardly anyone ever calls it a 180 backflip. That's the difference between that and the Einstein flip, hence the reason it should be in there.Agent Sleeper 17:08, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yeah, and could we get someone to stop 204.185.233.xxx to stop his repeated vandalism of the article? Agent Sleeper 17:13, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disciplines section is weird

[edit]

The beginning of that section is filled with grammatical errors and POV statements. Not to mention there are no citations. This section either needs to be cleaned up or completely removed. -tbone (talk) 22:28, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and removed it myself. - tbone (talk) 22:30, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changed some stuff in the bikes section

[edit]

it seemed incoherent and thoroughly edited by many people with plenty of awkward language, misspellings, and bad grammar, so i decided to do some clean-up. hopefully its better than it was before. Advertisehere (talk) 21:01, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

References?

[edit]

This article has now been tagged for over a year, asking for references, clean-up of original research, personal essay-like prose, and general clean-up. I did quite a bit of clean up, but I am in no way a BMX expert.

13 months is a bit long to be asking for references. Doesn't anyone care? I'm about ready to PROD this article again, it seems like no one really wants to improve it. If that's the case, let's just dump it out. --Manway (talk) 07:47, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can't prod it again - you will have to take it to WP:AfD. However, an article needing cleanup, even for an extended period of time, is not grounds for deletion. SeveroTC 11:09, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't remember the no 2nd prod, thanks for reminding me - I really don't want to see it deleted, it just seems like the tricks section gets added to every two or three days, but no one wants to add any refs. I guess I'm frustrated, and trying to light a fire under experienced editors more than anything. Thanks, Severo. Appreciate the comment and reminder. --Manway (talk) 14:00, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Then why not remove the section? I'm not an expert, but to me it looks like a section of people just adding things they made up one day, which is hardly encyclopaedic. SeveroTC 14:26, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Improved history

New historical info with citations were added --Dendowling (talk) 14:18, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Update to include pre-1970s history

[edit]

This article should be updated to include, at the least, the contributions of Lilly Yokoi. She was doing what we now call freestyle BMX in the 1950s and 60s. See, for example, http://www.circopedia.org/Lilly_Yokoi or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQBbHzypBro — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.202.125.31 (talkcontribs) 02:09, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

2019 World Championship

[edit]

Need to create pages for championships. For example, "Hannah Roberts, U.S. star in new Olympic event, claims another world title" [1] tbc (talk) 16:15, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Title

[edit]

Isn't it more commonly called "BMX freestyle"? Pelmeen10 (talk) 01:13, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
