It seems to me the main article here should be Free trade zone Dev1n 21:26, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
I disagree: the general phenomenon we're talking about here is a Special Economic Zone, a part of one country (created *unilaterally* by some level of government in that country) where the domestic economic regulations are different to the rest of the country, with the aim of encouraging the development of export-based businesses in the zone. How exactly the zone is 'special' may vary from one zone to another. So all FTZs are SEZs, but not necessarily vice versa, and an SEZ can involve more than just trade barriers.
Besides, Free Trade Zone is a bad choice for the main article because it's a term easily confused with Free Trade Area, which is something totally different - an FTA is created by a *multilateral* agreement to eliminate (most) tariffs and quotas on trade between the parties involved. In this cases the parties to the agreement are generally countries or other organisations capable of signing trade agreements (such as the EU). For example, the US, Mexico and Canada form an FTA by virtue of NAFTA. Incompetent 15:36, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
- object to merge of everything. While an overview article may be created, the notions are often different, bot historically and in terms of exact definitions. `'Míkka 20:14, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- This is very confusing, I support the idea of unifying everything into "Special Economic Zones", or SEZs, and letting FTZs be a special case of those. The core features of a FTZ should be:
- Free trade conditions (no tariffs, no custom duties)
- It should be an industrial estate, with companies specialized in manufacturing activities---*object Trade is not manufacturing! Many free trade zones allow only the storage, repackaging, relabeling, of goods, but no manufacturing. Traditionally free trade zones did not allow manufacturing. That is why the term EPZ developed to distinguish it from FTZ in that it allowed assembly and manufacturing. However the terms are now used indiscriminately. An SEZ used to be an area with a resident population, that EPZ and FTZ did not have.---I am the former Director of the World Economic Processing Zones Association, and I have lived through these changes.--EZBob (talk) 05:46, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
- A liberal regulatory environment
- Should every FTZ be located at ports??--Forich (talk) 17:48, 5 May 2008 (UTC) No. Many are located inland.--EZBob (talk) 05:46, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
