Merge

[edit]

This appears to be one of the historical names for the university today called Humboldt University of Berlin. And since all the information on this page is ALREADY on that page, I don't see much reason not to merge. We could put a hatnote at the top of the HU Berlin page to cover other uses of this name.

Alternatively, this could become a dab page. ~ MD Otley (talk) 22:06, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've already tried to have this page deleted since it made no sense to keep it when the pre-1948 period is already covered (and better) in the Humboldt University of Berlin article. But I was unable to get it done. Hopefully, with your support, we can get this out of the way finally! Zwerg Nase (talk) 22:14, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not again. Please read the old discussion pages. The result was: keep. --Kolja21 (talk) 21:17, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree; this stub of an "article" about a former name (one of several) of an entity which already has an article is essentially a duplicate and utterly unnecessary and unhelpful. There seems to be consensus here to merge/redirect it. I also note that the German Wikipedia doesn't have a separate article about the former name. In the old discussion that Kolja21 keeps referring to, the only user who wanted to keep this as a separate article was Kolja21, and it resulted in a WP:NOQUORUM-type "no consensus for a particular action regarding the article" at that time, not in any consensus against merging this article (especially at a later time following discussion and a (new) consensus here on the talk page). The discussion in question also had very limited participation, with two editors supporting deleting/merging the article and Kolja21 opposing it. In any event a new consensus here would trump any old debates anyway. --Tataral (talk) 17:44, 18 August 2017 (UTC) (Pinging former participants in this discussion: User:Mdotley, User:Zwerg Nase, User:Kolja21)[reply]
@Tataral: "I agree" - how nice. You meant you deleted the article twice. Of course people who studied at Humboldt like User:Zwerg Nase have a clear interest to promote their university. But WP should not correct history in favour of the GDR or students of the Humboldt University. After World War II the old Frederick William University was gone and the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin) is one of its successors. --Kolja21 (talk) 20:48, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have never studied at or been affiliated with any university in Berlin, so unlike you I'm entirely neutral in any petty struggle over which of the present-day universities that get to claim the legacy of the Frederick William University. However, Wikipedia is based on reliable sources, and reliable sources universally agree that the Humboldt University that exists today is the same institution as the "University of Berlin" that was founded in 1810 and renamed "Frederick William University" in the 1820s. The Free University on the other hand has never actually claimed the identity of the Frederick William University. Furthermore, this "article" of yours, that everyone else have agreed should be merged/redirected, is a low-quality duplicate WP:FORK and all the content and more is already found in the main article on the institution. --Tataral (talk) 21:24, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
