Neutrality?

[edit]

The current version seems to take a lot of his psychic research claims at face value -- I'd have thought that in more leftfield topics like psychic research we needed to be more cautious and use words like "claimed" "reported", &c? AdventurousMe (talk) 04:01, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Skeptical information

[edit]

Skeptical information on Bond is found in Kenneth Feder "Archaeology and the Paranormal" pp. 32-43, In Gordon Stein's book The Encyclopedia of the Paranormal, 1996.

With help from Bond's close friend, self-proclaimed medium Captain John Allen Bartlett, through the agency of automatic writing, the pair claimed that they had regular discourse with ancient spirits who directed them to the most propitious places to excavate and who described the physical layout of the church and provided detailed, very specific accounts of historical events that transpired there. Bartlett held the writing instrument, Bond placed his hand on Bartlett 's and an ostensibly unseen force directed both their hands, writing messages to the pair in English and Latin concerning what they would find, where they would find it, and what it meant... As McKusick (1982, 104) points out, the tall church towers, whose existence and locations we are to believe were provided by spirits, actually were recorded and located in a historical document Bond almost surely had already seen. Beyond this, an early drawing of the abbey, and even structural remains visible on the surface, provided clues as to the location of these towers. The Edgar and Loretto Chapels were known to church historians before Bond began his work had been generally located in historical documents, and had been searched for unsuccessfully previously. Bond did not have to look in those areas again and discovered these architectural features in the only reasonable places left for them to be (McKusick 1982, 104).

Marshall McKusick was an archaeologist and author of the paper Psychic Archaeology from Atlantis to Oz. Archaeology 37(5): 48-52.
