Factual accuracy
Two particularly suspect claims are 1962 train accident and 1963 aircraft crash, supposedly with 17 and 19 fatalities. These were obviously not minor incidents, yet there are absolutely no details on them (such as location, for example), nor they could be connected with any known (well, at least to me) accident. GregorB (talk) 21:42, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
- OK, from an earlier version of the article: supposed train accident happened while traveling from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik, while the aircraft flew from Zagreb to Rijeka. There is apparently no independent confirmation that these accidents actually happened, let alone that Selak was involved. GregorB (talk) 21:48, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, this is interesting. I suppose we could rework the article to state this, although I wonder if the folks at the Croatian WikiProject would be able to help. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 00:20, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
- GregorB, thoughts? Kevin Rutherford (talk) 19:47, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ktr101, this is really a gray area. There is no doubt that there are multiple reliable sources to support the article's claims. Also, there is an article in Večernji list (in Croatian, and also a reliable source) which provides more details:
- 1962 train accident is said to have occurred near Grabovica, Bosnia and Herzegovina
- 1963 aircraft crash is said to have occurred near Čabar, Croatia
- That seems specific enough, and even if I find odd that no independent sources confirm that these two major accidents actually happened, there are no conflicting accounts either, and I feel these events are at least plausible. I'm therefore removing the {{disputed}} banner. GregorB (talk) 20:08, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
- The accident database does not show any accident occuring over Croatia in the 1960s (see here). This is very suspect to me. Airline accidents with fatalities were rare in SFRY and any crash, even with few fatalities would be a big news. Tomkeus (talk) 13:26, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
- There is not a single source to check these claims except his own word for it from an interview in 2003: http://www.scotsman.com/news/world/fortune-smiles-on-unluckiest-man-1-652456. All subsequent articles seem to be based on that one. I don't understand this article doesn't have at least {{disputed}} banner. As far as I am concerned the whole entry should be deleted. YellowOnline (talk) 00:15, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
- It is just a story, looking for attention, using elements from the news and own inventions. -- Simplicius (talk) 10:47, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
- Nevertheless, with the apparent media attention he has gained, Mr. Selak is a good candidate for List of hoaxes. And all newspapers and websites that covered the story should automatically be disqualified as a reliable source WP could cite. --Danares (talk) 13:36, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
- I made a deletion request in German-language wikipedia.
- I find it very tragical for Wikipedia that such contents is presented as a truth. -- Simplicius (talk) 20:12, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

The article in German Wikipedia was deleted. Joy, you are from Croatia as well. So come on and tell us: what of this story is true? Simplicius (talk) 20:33, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
- You do realize that there's 4M people here, and that we don't all know each other, right? :P I honestly have no idea. Apply any and all relevant policies as appropriate. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 20:47, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
Subsequent articles include detail not in the Scotsman article. For example by the time of the Telegraph article he is married. The source cited is Jutarnji List. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 11:37, 23 June 2014 (UTC).

- This is the earliest I found, from June 2003. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 11:53, 23 June 2014 (UTC).
- A later source (2006) does not mention the lottery win, strangely enough. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 11:59, 23 June 2014 (UTC).

Popular culture
- This BBC report covers Selak's response to a YouTube animation. Seems he is missing his given-away fortune. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 11:34, 23 June 2014 (UTC).
Lottery winner indeed but a fake too
An articleclaims the flight was from Zagreb to Rijeka and anotherarticle from 2004, asking the same questions as you on Selak's story, claims it was a DC-8. In the same thread, a user claims that "No DC-8s have been lost between Zagreb and Rijeka, in 1963 or any other year.". None of the DC-8 accidents, or Zagreb accidents, seem to have any relation to this story.
Frane Selak deliberately fabricated the story in an interview with a journalist from The Scottsman, which has since been printed and reprinted over an over.

- Does anyone know when Selak's claims first surfaced? Could it be that it was only after his lottery win?Royalcourtier (talk) 08:45, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

Hoax
The whole seems to be a hoax or at least most parts of it. It is a fictive story. -- Simplicius (talk) 05:49, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
