Long Crouch Woods

Location

This is always a confused subject, and this is one of those locations that's most confused. Borders of 'neighborhoods' in Boston are not fixed or official, and mostly end up being simply the majority opinion of those who live there, but we can say some things based on history. The park was originally called the West Roxbury Park, because of its location in the northeast corner of the old town of West Roxbury, before the town was annexed to Boston. To the north, across Seaver st. was the old town of Roxbury, which had already been annexed to Boston. To the east, across Blue Hill Ave.,was the old town of Dorchester, which was annexed to Boston at the same time as West Roxbury. So while historically all of the land of Franklin Park had once been in the town of Roxbury, it had never been part of Dorchester. And after West Roxbury voted to separate from Roxbury in the 1850s, it had not been a part of Roxbury. And finally, since Jamaica Plain had been the name of the informal northern district of the towns of both Roxbury and West Roxbury, that leaves the park located in what we now call Jamaica Plain. Yet because it's stuck over in the corner of a town that no one remembers, you'll see citations for Dorchester and Roxbury that come from people relying on confused sources themselves. In fact, today the park isn't inany particular residential district, as there is no housing, and sitting at the corner of a town that doesn't exist any more, it would be more accurate to say that it sits surrounded by the three districts. Close to all, possessed by none. That's the best I can do, and no one can do better. I'm making the change. MarkinBoston (talk) 12:18, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
