Franktown??
[edit]I resided in Franklin for over 2 decades and never heard the town refered to as "Franktown". Anyone have any references that use that term?Cube lurker 19:57, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
- I beleive that expression is coming into more common usage with the kids, especially vis-a-vis myspace and facebook. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.98.68.86 (talk) 17:42, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- re: "Franktown," My two cents: Ditto the "never heard that" ... That said, some friends and I used to call the town "East [effing] Frankie." Does this make that a nickname of the town? jeez, i should hope not. once "the kids [and] myspace and facebook" get the town's government to declare "Franktown" as an official nickname, then it should be listed. this is supposed to be an encyclopedia, not the urban dictionary. 76.19.198.242 21:58, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- Think I'm going to remove it. Doesn't seem like there's that much support for it. --Cube lurker (talk) 14:25, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- I'm 34 I've lived in Franklin my whole life. Me and a lot of my friends refer to it as Franktown amongst each other and we have been for years. Since high school. We all graduated in the late 90s early 2000's, that generation. JoeyParadise (talk) 22:57, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
Nothing about Italian Americans?
[edit]I was always told growing up in nearby Norfolk that Franklin had a large Italian American population. Only things I can think of two support this is that the town celebrates the feast of Saint Rocco and that much of the Italian part of my family lives in Franklin. Can anyone dig up any articles about this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vishiano (talk • contribs) 09:13, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Lists of names
[edit]Lists of names in this article should be sourced in accordance with WP:BLP. As there is no way of constantly maintaining linked articles, this applies to names which have a Wikipedia article as well as those that do not. Any name listed with no verifiable citations should be removed. Refer to WP:NLIST for guidance. Fæ (talk) 07:57, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- Totally disagree. The policies cited above refer ONLY to the biographical articles, NOT to any lists in which they might be linked. What YOU ask is that notability be proved in the list because you can't possibly prove it in the article. The article can't be maintained, you say. Such a view is not only not WP policy, but it runs counter to the entire notability criteria. The article, not the list, has to prove notability. If you really believe your criteria are the correct interpretation, why did you not place tags on every single item? Is it not true that you must believe some articles demonstrate notabilty? I assert that proof of notability has NO place in a list. Notability must be proved in the article. However I note you have questioned the presence of some names in the list. What you REALLY intend is to question the notability of the person. What do you do in such cases? It is not consistent to annotate some items in the list and not others. Therefore I am removing those items you have questioned to this discussion below. This gives any editor the chance to argue notability. If notability cannot be proved, then your full task is to put the article up for deletion, not just to remove it from the list. Let's say someone DOES come up with notability refs - and it would have to be multiple, according to the policy - he still has to prove it in the article, so what's the point of trying to prove it here? Your cursory listing of a couple of policies does in no way support what you are trying to do. Notable residents section
[edit]I question the applicability of this section. WP is not a yellow page listing or a telephone book without the numbers. Most people move around a lot. Can we really take on the task of maintaining information on the current location of notable? I object. Some of them have so many residences they would have to appear in dozens of articles. Moreover, this section is not in keeping with what WP is doing with these lists. Usually the title is "Notable people from x" or "People from x" with the implication that they are notable. I think we should discuss this. If there is no discussion then I will change the name to "Notable people from Franklin." If you are really from Franklin once you stay from Franklin. If you reside there you might not be there next year. That is what we have phone books for. - In the late 1990's, resident and former town official, Mrs. Gail V. Lembo found the diaries of a George M. Wadsworth dated 1857 to 1893. A blood relative of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Wadsworth wrote extensively of daily life in South Franklin, including the local recruitment for the Civil War, train wrecks, and a murder-suicide. Realizing the importance of her discovery, Mrs. Lembo had the diaries bound into four wonderful historical volumes, and she donated them to the people of Franklin.

Notable people section
[edit]I removed several people from this section because they do not have their own Wikipedia article, which is required to establish notability. The information I removed is: Bob Ward, Fox 25 news reporter-anchor, Kevin Lemanowicz, WFXT Fox 25 chief meteorologist and Robert C. Weintraub, CPA, Partner with Graceffo, Hough & Weintraub, CPA, former resident of Franklin. Thanks --BuzyBody (talk) 01:04, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
- Does Vince Wilfork still have an official residence in Franklin? If not he should be removed from notable people, correct? Thanks, Garchy (talk) 15:00, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Overly detailed?
[edit]An editor, Garchy, tagged the article with {{overly detailed}} (which renders a message "This article may contain an excessive amount of intricate detail that may only interest a specific audience...".
Maybe it does and maybe it doesn't. The article is long. But my feeling is that if nothing is done, the tag will just sit there for years or indefinitely. I don't find tags like this that useful, so what I'd rather see is one of these two outcomes:
- Remove the tag, or
- Actually remove, split off, or move a bunch of material, and reasonably soon.
I don't feel like doing #2 and I'm not convinced it is necessary or helpful. So if the tagger or editors want to suggest specifically what can be removed, or just remove it (possibly subject to discussion, depending on what's removed), fine. Otherwise my inclination is remove the tag. Herostratus (talk) 01:43, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- The purpose of a tag is to point out the issue in hopes of enlisting help from other editors - not to spark a debate on whether there should be a tag or not. I'll remove the sections (especially the excessive climate stuff, which I've trimmed in the past but has since been restored), but I wouldn't be hasty in removing it - or assuming a drive-by tagging. Feel free to jump in as well in trimming the obviously excessive sections. Garchy (talk) 03:18, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- No thanks. I like data. The town has 33,000 people and and the page is 22 kilobytes. What should it be?
- Taking other towns established in the same year at random -- Mashpee, 14,000 and 23 kB. Falmouth, 31,000 and 28 kB. Mendon, 6,000 and 15 kB. Tisbury, 4,000 and 15 kB. Wrentham, 11,000 and 8 kB. Wellesley, 28,000 and 31 kB.
- So, debate sparked, I guess, since Franklin seems about in line with those -- article's a little smaller than most towns of similar population, actually. So I guess one question I have is, do you think that we gab too much about dinky towns in general here? If not, then shouldn't any material removed be replaced with other, different material? It's entirely possible that the article has too much cruft in one place and holes elsewhere. That's not exactly an {{overly detailed}} problem though. It's more a general problem.
- Yeah I agree that the climate section is pretty eye-bleedy, also unref'd. It should maybe be mostly replaced with one of those {{Weather box}} templates. That won't necessarily reduce the size of the article though (maybe it would). It would increase the level of detail to some degree.
- Comparing to Falmouth, Massachusetts, which is a similar size town with a similar size article... Falmouth has no Climate section, but it has a longer Geography section... roughly similar size History sections (Falmouth lists "Historic districts" though)... Education sections, ditto... Sports... Demographics... Notable people... I'm not seeing huge differences here. Falmouth has a bigger Transportation section... Franklin has a big "Points of interest" section, which does get a little bit into the weeds maybe... Falmouth doesn't have that, but does have "Groundwater pollution" and "Government" instead. Most of the other sections are small. Both articles are tagged for poor refs.
- I mean, what? Should the Franklin article be more like the Falmouth article? Are they both too detailed? Where are you coming from here? Herostratus (talk) 04:04, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- First, I would say WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. In general, nearly every section in this article is excessive and wordy - perhaps section tags would be helpful, but the Falmouth article isn't a good gauge unless it's a GA. I'm going to go in later today and trim - but the tag, which is necessary, isn't a stigma - it's the first step in fixing the article. Garchy (talk) 12:25, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- Alright. Herostratus (talk) 14:06, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- I went in and trimmed the sections I was concerned about - I also removed the tag, as I don't think it's necessary now. Feel free to take a look and adjust the changes. Garchy (talk) 14:32, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- OK, fine. I mean, the whole climate section was poor, and other details were unnecessary, and so thanks for those trims. On the other hand, IMO there's some good material to be salvaged from some of your cuts, maybe. I'll take a look at it presently, Herostratus (talk) 01:21, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
