Frank McKenna has now resigned as Ambassador to the United States and many people believe this is so he can run for the leadership of the Liberal Party.

The article already say that. - Jord 20:04, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
He hasn't actually resigned. He submitted a letter of resignation to someone who is not in a position to accept it. Harper does not formally become PM until Feb. 6.

Abortion

[edit]

There is a litle bit of scuttlebut on the blogosphere about McKenna's supposed opposition to abortion. There is a (partial) quote circling from about 3 weeks after the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in R v. Morgentaler in which McKenna said he would fight Morgentaler if he tried to set up a clinic in New Brunswick and that the clinic was not necessary. The missing context was that Morgentaler's clinics were established at the time where it was thought that there was not fair access to abortions however McKenna was complying with the court ruling and making abortions more readily available so, therefore, he said Morgentaler's clinic was unnecessary. Morgentaler went on to open the clinic and then fought the New Brunswick government in court -- he sued the province, not the other way around -- to try to get the province to pay for abortions at his clinic. The position of the Justice Department was that funding such a clinic would contravene the Canada Health Act because it is private and for profit. The Government of New Brunswick eventually won the case and did not have to pay for procedures in the clinic. I would also point out to people that the NDP government in Manitoba also was in court with Morgentaler from 2001 to 2004 on the same issue, their position was identical to McKenna's. - Jord 14:07, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Prospective Career in Federal Politics

[edit]

Will Mr. McKenna reconsider running for the leadership of the federal Liberal Party following the results of the most recent Federal election in 2008?

How would one go about developing a campaign to try and encourage Mr. McKenna to reconsider his decision not to run for leadership in 2006?

Party?

[edit]

His fact box doesn't list his party. Isn't it common practice to list the political party of elected officials? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.168.137.97 (talk) 00:47, 15 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
