Wisconsin in 1892

[edit]

Cbl62, despite Wisconsin and NCAA records indicating that Frank Crawford was head coach in 1892, I think it was actually William R. "Billy" Crawford (died 1933), who played at Yale in the mid 1880s, and was captain of the 1892 Chicago Athletic Association football team. See: https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-indianapolis-journal/158380435/ and https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-lexington-herald/158382470/. Thoughts? The linked obituary doesn't say anything about him coaching Wisconsin. What am I missing? Cbl62 (talk) 23:57, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, yes the obituary doesn't say a lot of things, like that he played for the Chicago Athletic Association. But the October 20, 1892 article from the Indianapolis Journal says "Billy" Crawford was coaching Wisconsin, and also indicates that he coached Butler the year before. More on Billy Crawford: https://www.newspapers.com/article/journal-and-courier/158394541/, https://www.newspapers.com/article/lafayette-weekly-courier/158394510/, https://www.newspapers.com/article/times-union/158394302/. Butler and NCAA records have their 1891 coach as "unknown". Butler/NCAA record mispell the program's prior and first coach, Clinton L. Hare, as "Clint Howe". Hare was also at Yale the same time William R. Crawford was. Jweiss11 (talk) 01:10, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have gone ahead and created Billy Crawford (American football), amended this article accordingly, and added notes about the mix-up to both articles. Jweiss11 (talk) 19:36, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Found some good stuff about a personaly rivalry between Billy Crawford and Clinton L. Hare! Jweiss11 (talk) 21:11, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
