Definition of volunteer
[edit]Dear Mr: Estalentau:
According to the wikipedia version of volunteer the DEFINITION of the word (as opposed to some private person's explanation in the intro) comes from: "word comes from Latin, and can be translated as "will" (as in doing something out of ones own free will)."
Furthermore, "BY DEFINITION (emphasis added), a volunteer worker does not get paid or receive compensation for services rendered other than reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses.[1]"
Now, out of this description what part doesn't fit into the part that Lopez Pena was a volunteer. Obviously some sources think he is a terrorist (spanish govt) and some think he is a revolutionary (ETA), but as wikipedia's encyclopedic authority we should mantain a more neutral definition, no? Lihaas (talk) 05:24, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Dear Lihaas, It is crystal clear Lopez Pena is a volunteer. No debate. However, he voluntarily joined a terrorist organization (ETA). Hence for clarity’s sake, he has to be named as terrorist.
“as wikipedia's encyclopedic authority we should mantain a more neutral definition, no?”
Don’t know about you, but I am an authority of nothing. Instead of rambling, we would better stick with ETA’s definition as terrorist group issued by reliable authorities such as UN and European Union. --Estalentau (talk) 00:35, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- Dear Mr: Estalentau:
- The UN doesn't maintain a list of organizations as such, so I don't know where you get that from. The EU is a body representative of its members, so it is naturally going to espouse what spain demands.
- Nonetheless, there are extralegal entities that don't consider them terrorists. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying they're revolutionaries or such. I'm merely saying BOTH sides inhibit a bias.
- Perhaps you have another term more neutral. But terrorist and revolutionary are also biases on 2 different sides.
