The "long intrigue"
[edit]The description of the duke's fall from power is... interesting. It completely omits any reference to the two separate real estate swindles the duke engineered at the expense of the crown which triggered not a "long intrigue" but an investigation into his shady dealings. The duke knew his goose was cooked, and persuaded the Pope to make him a cardinal so he wouldn't be put to death. Is there any reason not to include this information? [edit]This article is about a person, not a title or the ducal family. Therefore the full name needs to be included as is standard on Wikipedia. Gryffindor 20:13, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

This article states; "but he[Francisco Gomez de Sandoval y Rojas] persisted in costly and useless hostilities with England till 1604, when Spain was forced by exhaustion to make peace". This assertion is quite clearly an Anglocentic point of view and not fully accurate. The Treaty of 1604 stated that England would stop interfering in Spain's continental affairs and Spain would no longer try to conquer or Catholicsize England or it's poscessions. Moreover, England was forced into bankruptcy during the later part of the Anglo-Spanish war and failed in miserably during the Drake-Norris expedition of 1589 against the Iberian mainland. Furthermore, England's Royal Navy was unsuccessful in it's attacks against the Spanish Main(Caribbean) and increasingly fruitless when it's privateers attempted to seize Spanish treasure fleets from well protected convoys. --Scipio-62 (talk) 13:43, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
