Francis Crozier's birthday
[edit]The article by Campbell, "The date of birth of Captain F.R.M. Crozier R.N." in Polar Record (2009) 45; 83–84. is not substantiated. This is a "note," a type of article that is usually not peer-reviewed. The evidence presented by Campbell is circumstantial at best. Campbell himself admits that Crozier's baptism was on 21 September 1796 per records in the National Archives, and Crozier himself refers to his birthday as the 17th in a letter. The basis of Campbell's argument is a journal entry by Sergeant W.K. Cunningham, Sergeant of the Royal Marines in HMS Terror 1839–1843, which states that '16th [August 1842] Tuesday Blowing fresh all day. The Captains birth day: all the Officers of both Ships dined with him and Spent the evening.' There are any number of reasons why Crozier's birthday might have been celebrated a month early, and no reason to suspect that Crozier's baptismal record or own recollections about his birthday are wrong. Campbell's argument is insufficient proof. Angengea (talk) 20:32, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
Francis Crozier's ancestry
[edit]I'd like to learn what the source was for the information about the cavalry officer who went to Ireland with Strafford; both the information about his Durham origins and about the land his second son had in Fermanagh and Tyrone. LYH2864 (talk) 12:57, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Daguerrotype of Crozier at auction
[edit]- Franklin expedition: Portraits of doomed Arctic explorers go to auction. The article shows an enlarged and retouched detail of the Daguerrotype. Perhaps an image of the whole thing will be published somewhere shortly; the quality is certainly better than the image in the article. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:45, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
