Multiple names

[edit]

A word of warning to anyone working on this writer: the usual problems of working with women as subjects — sorting out family names from married names — are further complicated in this case by Frances Cowper having had three given names (Frances, Maria, Cecilia) in addition to her family name (Madan) and her married name (Cowper), for a total of five names which, maddeningly, appear in a variety of combinations in the records. Worse, there seems to be no clear convention as to whether she should be referred to as "Frances Maria" or "Maria Frances." And even worse yet, she came from a family who kept marrying their first cousins and naming their children after each other. So, just ... good luck, researchers! — scribblingwoman 20:41, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
