Table
[edit]I turned the messy list into the table but the numbers don't seem to match the Excel sourced in the article that supposedly has all the numbers, and even if it is right it isn't validly sourced so that needs to be cleaned up if anyone runs across this and wants to do it, otherwise I'll try to get around to it at some point. Possible Edits to Be Made
[edit]It may be helpful to add in a section about global health interventions that Haiti receives because the article is geared mainly towards the economic support that Haiti gets but an additional form of aid is global health intervention. This may display to readers that not only is Haiti dependent on developed nations for foreign aid but also for the sake of meeting the health needs of their citizens.
In addition, it might be helpful to get more verified sources and have more leading topics.
Lastly, it might be helpful to give a background of why Haiti needs aid. This can include: issues with their independence from colonization, stigma, sex tourism (its affiliation with the country's HIV/AIDs prevalence rate) and natural disasters. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Agrey39 (talk • contribs) 06:38, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
NPOV removed
[edit]I've removed the NPOV template, please use {{POV-section}} or better yet {{POV-statement}} for sentences, then detail issues here. This will help address them in a timely manner. - RoyBoy 03:15, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
A Brief Critique
While this article thoroughly explains the various initiatives the U.S. has implemented in Haiti as part of its foreign aid efforts, it disproportionately focuses on the positive impacts of U.S. aid. The article mentions that “U.S. assistance has attempted to create opportunities for stable, sustainable employment for the growing population” and that “a post-intervention transitional program of short-term job creation, principally in small towns and rural areas, provided employment to as many as 50,000 workers per day throughout the country.” However, the article fails to mention that U.S. foreign aid also exerts a negative impact on economic development efforts in Haiti. According to the documentary “Poverty, Inc.”, local entrepreneurs in Haiti that attempt to start their own businesses are often put out of business by foreign aid donations from U.S. non-profit organizations and government agencies. Due to the overwhelming surplus of foreign aid donations, citizens of Haiti are unable to start successful businesses of their own, which prevents sustainable economic development and keeps Haiti dependent on the resources of other countries. This article could be improved by presenting this aspect of foreign aid to Haiti, as this is a viewpoint that is currently underrepresented. This leads me to believe that the article is not entirely neutral, as the frame of the article appears to be heavily slanted towards the idea of foreign aid always being a commendable act and having positive impacts. Otherwise, this article is well-written and presents valuable information about the topic.Sraman195 (talk) 00:49, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Plans to Edit
Due to the reasons mentioned in my critique above, I may potentially add to this article by elaborating on some of the negative implications of foreign aid to Haiti. I believe this will allow the article to present an important viewpoint on the issue of foreign aid that was previously underrepresented.Sraman195 (talk) 00:49, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Addition to article
[edit]I think it would be beneficial to add how Haiti has reacted to the aid and what results the aid from different countries has brought them. This will be helpful to better understand why the aid is needed and what aid still needs to contributed in order to help restore Haiti. I think a response from the Haitian government of how helpful the resources have been will provide more context of what foreign aid is really doing for them. I think it will also be beneficial to add how Haiti is dealing with foreign aid and what they think has been the most impactful so that different countries can learn about how the can impact other countries in need in the most efficient way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SCounts2 (talk • contribs) 20:52, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
Peer Review MF
[edit]I think that your article is headed towards a good direction. For instance, the use of the table and figures shows that you have done substantial research on the subject. However, I would suggest that you begin by writing a lead section summarizing what your article will focus on. It is confusing as the reader to understand the significance of these figures without it. I would try to answer the following questions in the lead in order to engage readers: why is this theme important and how does it relate to today? In terms of structure, I would suggest that you add units to the table. I'm also interested in how you came up with the order of choosing with country's aid to focus on and in what order, perhaps try making it more obvious. In terms of neutral content, I would like to see more negative information of the issue. It seems that a lot of the information you present is positive. You could perhaps introduce implications that have surged such as the theory of white savior complex? In terms of reliable source, I would just make sure your numbers are up to date and focus on one specific year. Overall, you have a strong basis and just need to further develop. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marycfernandez (talk • contribs) 18:50, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
April 2018
[edit]I have reverted a number of changes to the article. It is still a mess and needs a lot of work, but adding in unsourced, US-centric, essay like content is not the way to start. Content needs to be written in a neutral, encyclopedic tone (not for example using adjectives like "heart-tugging" or descriptions like "hell hole" , and not asking rhetorical questions like "This disparity begs the question about how one island produced two totally different worlds?"). Content needs to be sourced to reliable, independent sources. Content needs to be focused on the topic at hand, for example not adding in a random unsourced overview of Haiti's history (we already have a reasonably good History of Haiti article). It's great that some student editors are taking an interest in this topic, but I would suggest you need to first take some time to read and understand how wikipedia works, and then make small changes one at a time, rather than try to comprehensively rewrite the article in such an unhelpful way.
