Did Foot Guards 'sleep overnight' at the Bank of England in the early 1900's?

[edit]

I read recently in novel "The Day the Robbed the Bank of England" that the Queen's Foot Guards marched to the Bank of England each night were they guarded the gold reserves. Is that true? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.6.128.111 (talk) 15:33, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If they were supposed to be guarding the gold, let’s hope they weren’t sleeping. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 08:06, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Foot Guards" capitalized?

[edit]

Why is this article name capitalized? It's not a proper noun. Within the article itself, it's not capitalized. If there are no objections, I'll move this article to foot guards. --A D Monroe III(talk) 15:36, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Seniority of the Coldstream Regiment of Guards

[edit]

I think the comments about the Coldstream need to be clarified. As I understand it, the Coldstream was formed before the first regiment of guards, the former name of the Grenadier guards. However, the first regiment of guards were in the service of the king earlier because the Coldstream was a Scottish regiment. (The timing relates to the act of union.) I’m not sure they were ever called the “second guards” because the regiment objected to that name, and the king received them as the “Coldstream Regiment of Guards”. This led to their motto Nulli Secundus.

The first regiment of guards holds position on the right flank of the line because of their official seniority. The other flank, the left, is regarded as another honoured position. (Formations in line of battle naturally wanted their most reliable soldiers protecting the flanks.) So, the position of the Coldstream has nothing to do with the motto and everything to do with not being second in line to the Grenadier Guards.

Finally, it might be worth noting that the Grenadier Guards was awarded that name (and their bearskins) after the Battle of Waterloo because they thought the French regiment attacking them was the Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard. It is now known that it wasn’t. Also possibly worth noting is that the “Coldstream Guards“ are not referred to by that name within the regiment. They are formally “the Coldstream regiment of guards“ and informally simply “the Coldstream“.

All of the above needs to be verified and properly cited, which is why I am writing it here rather than taking the time to dig up regimental histories and traditions. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 08:42, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

PS - I see the article uses the term Coldstream Guards in most cases. As I come across information, I will either add it to Talk or edit the article a bit at a time. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 08:47, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
