Conventional verses alternative

[edit]

The sections in this article - Conventional Food Systems and Alternative Food Systems - are highly questionable. The attempted definition provides no real rationale, as what is called alternative here is not necessary. As an example, co-operative systems are considered alternative. I would strongly disagree with that. In New Zealand, for example, co-operative food systems are the norm (i.e. the convention). While proponents of alternative food systems think there is power in the term alternative, I question whether really much of this is alternative. The distinction between these two section is more based on a 'technological' verses 'sustainable' paradigm than conventional and alternative. I think the issue is making it clear how and why these are alternatives. The literature presents these as efforts to resist trends in globalization that this article calls "conventional" food systems, so they certainly seem like alternatives in the minds of participants. If co-operatives are the norm in New Zealand, it's an exception to trends elsewhere. — Ƶ§œš¹ [ãːɱ ˈfɹ̠ˤʷɪ̃ə̃nlɪ] 01:29, 10 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
