The inscription

[edit]

Would a very literal translation of this be: "Urban VII, Pontifex Maximus, with a fountain having been erected for the public ornamentation of the city, provided this convenience [i.e. the spring] especially for the use of every [citizen]"? I'm assuming "fonti + exstructo" are making an ablative absolute, and "consuluit" is taking the ablative (i.e. "commoditate hac"). I'm not familiar with "singulorum", so I'm sort of guessing it means "everyone" (and that "singulorum usibus" basically means "for all to use"). Any thoughts?--Gen.
