Guilders
[edit]What is the connection between florins and guilders?76.251.238.254 (talk) 17:15, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- Florin was an alternative name for the Dutch guilder, indeed right up to 2002 the symbol for the guilder was "ƒ". -- Arwel (talk) 19:08, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- Peter Spufford explains it in his book Money and it use in Medieval Europe. As I recall, the guilder was originally a large silver coin (something like a thaler) equal in value to a gold florin. Since florins and guilders were worth the same, they tended to be used interchangeably. Later someone started making gold coins equal in value to the (silver) guilder, known as the gold-guilder. Clean-up
[edit]I've made some minor edits and remove the clean-up tag, as it seems fine now. If anyone feels I've missed something important, please edit the page or re-tag and put the reasons on here. Thanks, Boleyn2 (talk) 14:02, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
How about some mention of this Florin which is even mentioned in a Wikipedia article found at; How about the florin mentioned in the wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navarrese_Company Maybe it needs some mention? 69.92.23.64 (talk) 01:38, 20 September 2009 (UTC)Ronald L. Hughes
Medieval 2: Total War
[edit]Should M2TW's florin even be listed here as fictional? The florin article states that "In the fourteenth century, a hundred and fifty European states and local coin issuing authorities made their own copies of the florin.", and logic would dictate that the florin in M2TW is actually this florin and its copies or derivatives. –Xoid 02:46, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
- Based on the fact that the Florin itself is not fictional, I've removed the entire section. Listing games in which the florin was used is not noteworthy. Ryan8374 (talk) 18:20, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
Sweet baby Jesus what a mess
[edit]First off, WP:USEENGLISH WP:COMMONNAMES the florin tout suite is precisely the Florentine florin, whose content should be restored here.
Second, the current content of the page is just an logorrheic disambiguation between other less important "florin" coins which a isn't how we write disambiguation pages and b is currently less complete and far less useful than the existing florin (disambiguation) page. Those two pages should be merged, whether here or at florin (disambiguation). — LlywelynII 14:04, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Third, even leaving guilders out of it, the Venetian, Hungarian, & al. copies of the Florentine coin seem to already be (better) addressed at ducat. — LlywelynII 14:58, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
- Support: the changes suggested by LlywelynII (talk · contribs) seem very reasonable and work given that there is already a distinct Florin (disambiguation) page and I also support the case that the common English meaning of the term florin is indeed the Florentine florin. - Fourth. What on earth is a ‘supercompany’ and did it exist during the era of the florin? For pity’s sake... 2001:44B8:3102:BB00:74DC:C7C5:194F:488D (talk) 06:19, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
