Running Jokes

[edit]
  • Wikification and Financial Failures Bit

Just tidied this up a bit, and rewrote the more recent section about their financial failures. A little concerned that there's more writing on the right-hand column, but that might just be me being weird. If anyone agrees, just move the bit about Murray's wife to the bottom of the left column. 86.135.183.212 21:23, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Is the running jokes section really necessary? It seems a little inane/"unencyclopaedic" to list them all off - Wouldn't it make more sense to say something like "One of the features of the show is regular use of running gags. For example, the duo's hostility toward Australia and the difficulty of others understanding their New Zealand accent.". Just a thought. Hughtcool (talk) 23:44, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Parody Edits

[edit]

One person's opinion on which songs or artists are being parodied is not suitable content for this page in my opinion. Firstly, the section being edited is a summary of episode plots and should really be limited to the plot of the episode and not include extraneous information. I don't think it would be suitable content for the episode pages themselves either since all of the songs so far existed prior to the TV show (and thus are not specific to the episode). It might be appropriate to perhaps create a page on the song itself and provide parody information there if you could find references to back up what you write. For instance, Bret and Jermaine have talked in interviews about some of the artists they have mimicked. BigBadaboom0 14:12, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. The nature of the parody is a core element to the show. They may not form an essential element to the plot, although the third paragraph of the article itself may go some way to refute on the basis that the songs are actual dialogue or an internal monologue. The way I see it, the parody goes quite far in alluding to the dynamic of the show, and the nature of the situations the character in. With a show that's heavily based on parody the songs are the best way of concisely showing what the dramatic style is and the particular nature of that episode. Buceph Haelez 03:59, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Some comparisons people were making early on were a bit of a stretch, but since I wrote that I have softened my stance somewhat. If you look at the articles for some of the later episodes you will see details there about the styles they are mimicking. However I am still reluctant about statements of the form "song X is a parody of Y" unless (a) it is obvious and we can link to something that demonstrates it (eg the Serge Gainsbourg parody in 'Girlfriends'), or (b) there is a source originating with the filmmakers. - BigBadaboom0 09:40, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Songs

[edit]

Song title confusion

[edit]

One feature of FotC performances is that the lyrics of songs can vary quite markedly from one performance to the next. The same applies to the song titles to some extent. Songs have been called different things by different sources. This has already resulted in several edits back and forth by various people of the titles of the songs that are listed for each episode.

I am proposing a policy for determining the most correct song titles by specifying an order of authority. My proposal is that we determine authority in the following order:

  1. Song title as reproduced in printed form on an official recording (ie. CD track listing).
  2. Title as specified directly by the band members themselves (such as on an official website, or orally in concert footage).
  3. Title as listed on HBO website - but with spelling and grammar corrections where necessary.
  4. Otherwise the best guess until a more authoritative source presents itself.

My issue with the HBO website is that so far they have on many occasions listed a song title that differs from a previously common name for a song (eg. 'Think About It' rather than 'Think About It. Think, Think About It', or have had spelling/grammar errors ('If Your Into It', Rhymenocerous / Rhymenoceros).

I have used the above method for determining song titles for episode four and intend to update the three previous episode pages using the same technique. BigBadaboom0 15:37, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Episodes 1-3 have now been updated using the above scheme. BigBadaboom0 04:10, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of/Inspiration for songs

[edit]

Should this section not be expanded to say what influences went into each song, for example, "Inner City Pressure" is influenced by Pet Shop Boys "West End Girls". ?? I know it's a bit subjective, but some are obvious.

Cast Table

[edit]

I made a cast table and uploaded screens of all of the characters. Let me know what you think and edit their descriptions. Thanks. --Excaliburhorn 23:12, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The table looks great, but we can't use copyrighted images in charts like this, per our Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, specifically #3 and #8. We're always striving for minimal use of images we can't release the rights to. (ESkog)(Talk) 23:26, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've redone the table. I split it into two parts for organisational reasons and also because there is no real need for an episode column for the main cast. I also removed all the spoilers that were added. Finally I changed Coco back to (present-tense) girlfriend since the current episode is less than a week old (ie. spoiler) and it is not 100% definite that she is 'ex' yet :) BigBadaboom0 03:22, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone else laugh everytime they read, "Sneaks into Jemaine's room and kisses him on the cheek every night..."? Good work on the tables. Too bad about the pics. --Excaliburhorn 06:00, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, seems a shame about the pics. If it's fair use to put up episode screenshots, it seems odd that it would not be ok to put up a small portrait pics. However since ESkog is an experienced admin, I guess we have to bow to his experience in this matter. BigBadaboom0 07:24, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The main issue is our concept of "minimal use" of non-free content. A portrait of a character may be appropriate in an article about that character, just as an episode screenshot may be appropriate in an article about a show. Neither one is okay in lists or galleries. (ESkog)(Talk) 13:14, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. BigBadaboom0 15:06, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mel

[edit]

Mel is obviously not married.

She claims she is married to Doug in the first episode, and other than her lascivious behaviour, I don't see any real evidence to the contrary. BigBadaboom0 07:04, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In episode six (Bowie) we learn that it is Mel and Doug's wedding anniversary. So the 'Mel is not married' theory is losing some ground I think :) BigBadaboom0 15:21, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Mel is definitely married. Clconway 22:43, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Are you guys retarded? The whole point of the joke is that she's IS married yet still wants to mess around with them. 71.202.65.158 19:11, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we get that. We were responding to one or two people who were insisting that she wasn't. My apologies if our use of politeness confused you. -- BigBadaboom0 02:21, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I thought that it was implied that Doug was fired from the University because he got involved with a student -Mel? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.224.35.64 (talk) 17:52, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it's in Episode 2 I think where they (Doug, Mel, Brett) are sat in the Uni library, he says he used to be the "Senior Psychology Professor" or something, now he just "hangs round here". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 20.133.0.13 (talk) 14:41, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Codes"

[edit]

What is the purpose of the episode codes in the table? They obviously aren't production codes -- the first episode to be filmed was "Mugged". Pele Merengue 00:56, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you're basing that on the fact that Mugged was filmed when it was all snowy, New York City had a bunch of periods of snow and heat in March, when they started filming the show. I was there for the week of March 11-17, and it was hot for two days, then there was a hail/snow storm lasting a day or two, and then melted the next day. -- Viewdrix 02:27, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I originally gave the episode those codes before we found out that they'd changed the order of some of the latter episodes. Obviously they are just pseudo production codes now, since they do not list real production codes in the credits. However they do provide a good shorthand numbering system for the series & episode number, and this method is not unique to this article. As for why I listed them in the recurring guest star table - I thought it might be useful information to collect. Obviously at some point (for example if there is another series) then the list would become stupidly long and should be removed or moved elsewhere. -- BigBadaboom0 10:55, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Synopsis'. Synopseses. Synopsese.

[edit]

Do you think the synopsis o each episode is really necessary? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.180.85.70 (talk) 21:13, August 20, 2007 (UTC)

Maybe not strictly, but my PoV is that it provides a spoiler-free summary of the episode for those that happen upon the article. So it does have some use. -- BigBadaboom0 00:33, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inter-scene guitar riff

[edit]

Is the guitar music at the beginning of each TV episode created by FotC? I listened some time ago to a Sunday Drivers song and it had the same chords... --80.26.11.89 (talk) 00:45, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt it, unless the Sunday Drivers song has the exact same drum fill after it, the 'guitar music' is actually just 2 or 3 (can't remember, you'll have to watch them play it) chords so you can't really say it's a song. IMHO. 20.133.0.13 (talk) 11:47, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As I noted below, it also bears some similarities to the riff used in the Tenacious D TV show, but it isnt the same. I cant say for sure, but even if it is a licensed riff, I doubt it is identical to the one you remember. Metao (talk) 00:12, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"running gags"

[edit]

Should this page really tell people any of the jokes from the show? I don't think it should.SuperGerbil 02:41, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion of the themes and nature of the show is not inappropriate I think. Other articles have similar sections. For instance, see Running gags in Friends and Recurring jokes in The Simpsons. -- BigBadaboom0 03:27, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that this section is not necessary and should be deleted, or at least reformatted. It looks awful right now. Incetardis101 05:09, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't disagree with the section as it actually provides some interesting information about the series. However, the 'Elapsed Time' joke, as far as I can tell, isn't actually much of a running joke in the series. I suggest deletion of that particular entry but the rest of the section is fine by me. --Ishmael N. Daro 19:19, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps another running gag is the duo's lack of sexual experience with girls, such as in the episode where Bret gets a new 'girlfriend' and remarks after the one night-stand "Well you had sex on me..". Also in "New Fan" where there is confusion that a one-on-one encounter is not a "Twosome"? I'm sure there are others? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 20.133.0.13 (talk) 15:05, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is covered by the section "Unsuccessful relationships with women". BigBadaboom0 (talk) 22:59, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Toyota Land Cruisers

[edit]

Not a running gag but a running theme; I've noticed in a lot of the outdoor scenes feature strategically placed Toyota Land Cruisers, e.g. in the very first scene in Episode 1 outside the cafe, is an 80-Series parked up directly behind Bret and Jemaine and central to the shot for a few seconds.. The Land Cruiser being the definitive 4x4 of Australia and New Zealand for over half a century I'm pretty sure this is deliberate by one of the crew.

There's a few more scattered around but I need to confirm the episodes and model numbers just to confirm. Any views on this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 20.133.0.13 (talk) 15:20, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm... interesting if true (I hadn't noticed). I'm not sure that it is significant enough to warrant inclusion though. This section is hard enough to keep under control as it is. :) BigBadaboom0 (talk) 05:07, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In Episode 2, during the song "Inner City Pressure" and outside the fruit shop/"Coffee Connection", a Silver 100 Series Land Cruiser is seen parked up in camera shot behind the duo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 20.133.0.13 (talk) 14:36, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This article or section resembles a fan site.

[edit]

A week ago, user Dancter, inserted the following template:

to the top of the article. I posted a question on Dancter's talk page asking for further info on what he/she thought was inappropriate. Since there has been no response after a week, I've removed the template. It's possible Dancter is right, but I believe everything in the article has a precedent, so I'd like more info on what he/she (or anyone else) thinks needs fixing. Until that time, I think it is appropriate to remove the tag. Please add a comment below if you have suggestions on how to improve the page. Note that there is already some discussion about certain sections in other parts of this talk page. -- BigBadaboom0 15:34, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Australia as a Nemisis and Confusion of Nationality?

[edit]

Could those two be merged? To me, they seem like basically the same thing. Thanks! Mammamiamania 00:50, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

They seem pretty different to me; not just the nature of the problem, but also the fact that they are mistaken for being English as well as Australian. -- Avenue 04:08, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
User:Avenue is correct. These are two very different themes. --AStanhope 10:54, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vikings

[edit]

The following note was placed in the body of the article by an anonymous contributor. I have moved it here. -- BigBadaboom0 05:14, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(Note to previous contributor - New Zealand does have a large section of its population descended from Vikings and is recognised by the Danish government as being the most ethnically Danish country outside of Denmark. Our Viking heritage is a very important part of New Zealand culture. In the episode in which Coco asks about Vikings, Bret answers in the affirmative. So that isn't really a joke. The name New Zealand uses Danish spelling of the word meaning "Sealand" and though originally named after Zeeland in Holland, is is entirely appropriate that we use the name of the island in Denmark where Copenhagen is located. But it is true that the rest of the world knows very little about us.)

Fair use rationale for Image:Conchords Intro.png

[edit]

Image:Conchords Intro.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. This appears to have been flagged due to a lack of a link back to the referencing page. This has now been fixed. -- BigBadaboom0 12:44, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This show is clearly very similar to the 1997 show Tenacious D had (on HBO) - whether this was on purpose or not, I have no idea, but the story of two comedians taking their music seriously and trying to make it big is similar, as is the guitar riff theme between scenes. I propose to link the two, at minimum in a See Also section, but possibly also in the text briefly noting the similarity in both this article and the Tenacious D (TV series) page. Metao 08:12, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is clear that many Tenacious D fans feel that they deserve some recognition. I would support it if there was some indication that FotC or the production company was inspired by that show, but AFAIK there isn't. I don't agree that simple similarity to another show warrants a link. BigBadaboom0 (talk) 06:48, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, actually. WP:NOR has stopped me from doing it for 8 months now... Metao (talk) 07:28, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Note to self: http://monsterfresh.com/2007/06/06/conchords/ Just about every article on FotC compares them to the D, so Im thinking that Id like to incorporate that the comparison exists. Unfortunately, when it comes to comparing the two shows, only this one no-name blog post seems to state anything useable. *sigh* Oh well. Metao (talk) 10:06, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Any mention of Tenacious D should include the bit in Episode 6 after the Photo Shoot, the photo appears in Page 8 of a publication. It clearly says "Tenacious Dundee?" under the photo. When it next zooms in this is removed! Anyone else notice that?! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 20.133.0.13 (talk) 14:50, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is it enough to point out that Troy Miller has produced and directed for both shows? Although I don't know off hand how involved that has made him in either. 65.122.207.2 (talk) 15:02, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

State Connection...?

[edit]

I know it's in the credits on the page for "Drive By", but should Kevin Allison from the State be mentioned in the Cameo section? I know I at least felt it was significant seeing Aziz, Bret, Jermaine, and Kevin all in one shot, especially since it's a cast member from the State that doesn't pop up all over the place. Just a notion. 65.122.207.2 (talk) 14:26, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would say no. To me a cameo implies an appearance that is somehow special or unusual, such as a famous sportsman or musician having a small speaking role. BigBadaboom0 (talk) 13:35, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
His role was at least as big as Kate Pierson, Daryl Hall, or John Turturro, and certainly as relevant. He has a small speaking role, and while not being an extremely well known comedian was at least a part of a group that are certainly brethren to anyone doing comedy in New York. Anyone else have an opinion? HellaSkeletons (talk) 14:08, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I agree with BigBadaboom0. While his definition of cameo is slightly off - Stan Lee rarely says anything in his cameos in the Marvel films - I think a certain level of notability is required to make it worth mentioning. That said, if you had been bold and just put it in I probably would have left it. TBH, I think when Season 2 kicks off, this article is going to have to be trimmed a lot. A cameo section borders on trivia and to me would be a candidate for removal, as would the filming locations. The recurring themes section will also need some serious attention. I would be thinking about restructuring the article similar to Arrested Development (TV series). Metao (talk) 00:53, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I never saw 'The State', but from his IMDB resume, he appears to be a TV comedy actor. His appearance in a TV comedy would not be unexpected. Like Metao said, this section is probably going to be trimmed soon anyway. BigBadaboom0 (talk) 01:15, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Season two premiere on FunnyOrDie.com

Thanks for the note. There is already some info on the List of Flight of the Conchords episodes page. If a full article on the episode happens, it may not be until the official premiere date. We'll see. BigBadaboom0 (talk) 11:54, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Running Jokes tidy up

[edit]

I've had a bit of a tidy up of this section and added the following note to the source:

PLEASE READ THIS NOTE: It can be tempting to see a themes in the show based on just a couple of examples. However this section is/was starting to get large and lose its focus due to the tenuousness of some of the suggested themes. Before adding new sections here please discuss your suggestion on the talk page. Thanks.

I've felt for a while that this section was getting a bit out of control. It's so easy to see a couple of jokes on a similar theme and come to the conclusion that it was something intentional by the writers. We know from interviews that they do have some intentional themes, but some of the recent examples that have been added have undermined the focus and credibility of the section in my opinion.

Some new themes may emerge in season two, but I propose that we discuss them here first before adding to, or extending, the themes already present in the main article. BigBadaboom0 (talk) 01:03, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, also wait till the season is finished to spot proper "themes".20.133.0.13 (talk) 10:43, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've re-added "Rock the Party", as it appears in several episodes and is the only song they seem to play in "real life" (as opposed to dream sequences). — sjorford++ 14:43, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think this section needs to be included in the main portion of the article. Somebody should put up one of those banners discouraging trivia sections. But seeing as I don't feel like taking a beating over changing the entire structure of the article I DID add some info to the existing sections of what is already there. First off I clarified (but unfortunately made slightly longer) the Competition with Australia segment. As originally written I wouldn't be surprised if it WAS written by an Australian. Something to the effect that the show depicts Australians as "superior" and bashes New Zealand. I'm as disinterested a party as you can get and I can tell you the show treats New Zealanders much more fondly than Australians (who are in every instance villains or rivals as mentioned in the main portion of the article).

Actually the only reason I started editing was to point out that Bret & Jermaine do NOT have an Australian flag in their apartment. Sheesh! Did whoever wrote that even bother to look up what the New Zealand flag looks like? Aside from that I did add some more info to the "Who Like to Rock The Party" segment. I agree it's too long now, but I did bring up some good points (about the reality of "Who Likes to Rock The Party" vs. the imagined interludes and what it says about the band's skills within the world of the series) so instead of deleting them I think at some point everything mentioned in the Recurring themes and running jokes section should just be moved up to the main body of the article. I'm willing to help tackle it. Just send me a line. I'd like to be included in this conversation. Wellesradio (talk) 03:40, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with what was essentially your own assessment of it: While you did add some good bits, overall you made the sections too long and detailed. There are too many examples, and some of it borders on "original research" too...Sergecross73 msg me 13:13, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think I did go overboard with it. But as for the "original research"?Wellesradio (talk) 17:33, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Most of the songs performed on the show take place within the Conchords' imagination suggesting that they are only good in their own minds and that in reality their performances and skills are lackluster." -- I agree that there is a discord between their "performances" and their "music videos", but the whole "suggesting they're only good in their minds" part kind of sounds more like you're connecting the dots on your own. But regardless, it's also a little beyond the scope of "Rock the Party", so either way I think it doesn't belong in the article. Sergecross73 msg me 18:43, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Filming Locations

[edit]

I think this section needs to have a better structure, particularly for the future when more locations are added and the show has a cult status so people more want to visit then. Also it seems the locations are more glamourous and carefully selected in Season 2 with skyline shots from plush offices, and the outdoor swimming pool in episode 1 for starters. If there's no objections I'll format it to 2 tables like so:

Locations used throughout both series

Name Location
Dave's Pawn Shop 10 Montgomery Street
etc.. etc..

Episode-Specific Locations

Name Episode Location
Outdoor Swimming Pool S02E01 ???
etc.. etc..
Actually, Im tempted to describe this section as trivia/fancruft. You don't see sections like this on many TV show pages - although tbh most shows tend to be filmed in studios a lot of the time... Metao (talk) 00:13, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Trivia sections are discouraged by Wikipedia for good reason, far better to retain the current "location" section but make it easier to read/add to I think.. Plus with New York being such an iconic city with plenty of landmarks (emphasised in the program) I feel this section is appropriate. Just my opinion! 20.133.0.13 (talk) 10:42, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This section probably did need a rewrite. But I think it should have been to prose form rather than a table. Also when I originally wrote that section I tried to keep it to only locations that were in every, or nearly every, episode. Locations that are episode specific (like some of the ones just added) should go on the episode page. -- BigBadaboom0 (talk) 02:46, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed to leave the filming locations in their individual episode pages as that's quite well established. I've left the pilot one here for now until it maybe gets it's own page. If anyone knows how to stop wikipedia putting spaces after hyperlinks I'd like to know, it will make things look a lot neater. 20.133.0.13 (talk) 15:17, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Restored guest stars section

[edit]

I have restored the guest appearances section. It doesn't make sense that people like Judah Friedlander and Alan Dale are listed in a "cameos" section because their roles were small, but others like Demetri Martin and Kristen Wiig are not listed because their roles were larger. Mike R (talk) 18:01, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the intention is that guest stars are more properly mentioned on the page for individual episodes. However, I notice that Boston Legal lists the guest stars on the main page... so I'm torn on the issue. Metao (talk) 00:13, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Radio Series

[edit]

Shouldn't it be mentioned that large portions of the first season (and some throwaway gags from the second season) are basically rehashes of the BBC radio series they did in 2005? --MichiganCharms (talk) 11:48, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you can find a source for it, sure, maybe. Metao (talk) 00:37, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do you really need to source the obvious? How about the plot for episode 11, The Actor having the same plot as the second episode of the radio show? --MichiganCharms (talk) 03:00, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To my mind, yes, you would. Anything less would appear to violate WP:NOR. Metao (talk) 06:26, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree and have added to the history to point this out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.153.164.216 (talk) 08:04, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling

These guys are from New Zealand. Their show is American. So should we use American or English spelling? And if we use American spelling, should we use English spelling for quotations? (eg "the mum guitar" vs "the mom guitar") Metao (talk) 13:05, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it would be good to use the New Zealand spelling for anything referred to by the New Zealand cast and American spelling for anything else.

Characters

[edit]

I think we need to look at who we are including in the recurring characters list. Some are recurring characters, but some are just minor characters. If no one answers, ill have to remove some. IAmTheCoinMan (talk) 09:13, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

See my comment above. Metao (talk) 01:10, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have no problem with removing "Police Officer," "AJ Jones" (there is no evidence that the motel manager was A.J. Jones, other than being played by the same actor), or especially "Steve" from the recurring characters list. In fact, I'll remove Steve right now. Mike R (talk) 13:39, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Since there has been no opposition here, I will now remove "Police Officer" and "AJ Jones". Mike R (talk) 17:06, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Running jokes

[edit]

After repeated pleas on this topic, I significantly pruned the "running jokes" section down to basic motifs and took out all the specific examples. In a general description of the show for the main show page, there should be no need to describe specific instances of a joke or specific incidents. And, yes, the Australia bit is just a small part of the whole "New Zealand is insignificant" joke and I don't think it deserves more than a mention in that section. Acsenray (talk) 17:58, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. If it was part of the "New Zealand is insignificant" joke, they could pick any old country. They would probably choose Canada or something. The "vs Australia" joke is a deliberate, ongoing gag that definitely deserves its own mention. I love everything else you did with the Running Jokes section, though. Great job. Metao (talk) 01:33, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's basically a joke about New Zealand -- Australia is it's more popular, more successful neighbor. It's another joke about how New Zealanders don't measure up to the people around them. In any case, this running joke doesn't take more than a sentence to explain. As with the other running jokes, this isn't a place for specific examples. 149.79.35.227 (talk) 14:47, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Of course it is a joke about New Zealand - but it is more than that. Losing Sally to an Australian, being robbed by an Australian... those arent jokes about New Zealand. Those are jokes about how the boys feel victimised by Australians. It is an extension of the New Zealand joke, but it stands alone. In any case, I preferred Bad's phrase for it than the 1-liner in the current revision. Metao (talk) 06:34, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cameos?

[edit]

Why is Judah Friedlander listed as a cameo? He's just a comedic character actor and his bit in this show is not unlike a good chunk of the rest of his career. I don't know much about Alan Dale, but I suspect his case is much the same. Acsenray (talk) 18:23, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alan Dale is a bit of a different case - he's a New Zealander usually mistaken for an Aussie (due to playing Jim Robinson in Neighbours for many years) but he's worked in the US for many years now (Lost, The OC, Ugly Betty) and so the specific impact of his casting is probably lost on American viewers. That said, I think both fit there - call it cameo or special guest star or whatever. I should add Adam Garcia from the same (dance off) episode, and probably will soon. 86.1.70.108 (talk) 22:02, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
