Israel

[edit]

@Havsjö: is it true Gaddafi adopted a green flag in 1977 as his reaction to Egyptian president Anwar Sadat's visit to Israel? Is that the reason of the dissolution of the Federation of Arab Republics in 1977? ColorfulSmoke (talk) 10:00, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@ColorfulSmoke: I recommend the German version (you can use google translate) of the Federation of Arab Republics article[1], which is much more extensive than the very bare-bones and confusing English version. There were more factors for the failure of the Federation, but yes, when Sadat led Egypt's rapprochement with Israel Libya went on its own path of "Jamahiriya", including changing to the Green Flag on the very same day as his visit. --Havsjö (talk) 12:13, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Havsjö: This 2010 article on the Flag of Libya says the flag was changed to the current all-green design in reaction to Anwar Sadat's visit to Israel, and someone removed it in 2011. Should Israel be mentioned? Also i created this page Flag of Libya (1977–2011) several days ago. ColorfulSmoke (talk) 21:45, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ColourfulSmoke: Sadat's visit to Israel was indeed the "trigger" to the change of flag (and end of the Federation), but what I meant was that his trip was not the only reason for this change (since the Federation had been breaking apart for a longer period before Sadat's visit finally triggered Libyas withdrawal). I think Sadat's visit to Israel could/should be mentioned in the article, though, since this was the triggering event. --Havsjö (talk) 21:57, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
