Norwegian royal standard and flag
[edit]How can a link to the Royal Standard of Norway not be relevant when the article clearly states the the flag of Orkney is based partly on the coat of arms of Norway? It is equally relevant to the Royal Standard of Scotland. Inge 18:30, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- Perhaps a link to the Flag of Norway should be added as well? It seems pretty obvious that this new flag is based on it. -- Nidator 22:17, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Orkney banner of arms?
[edit]Would it make sense to also cover this flag ([1]) in the article? -- Nidator 16:09, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Hooray
[edit]I am so happy. Now I finally can use the Nordic flag without being mistaken. Thank you, Orcadians!
A Pan-Scandinavian greeting from Bab from the eo:wp
PS Sorry this doesn’t directly concern the article! :-)
- I suppose you have a point there. It is now "free" to be a symbol for the whole Nordic region, not that it is very well-known as such. -- Nidator 14:18, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- When I was a kid living in Norway, I once used a home-made Nordic flag in a May 17th procession… Not that many people recognized it, though… I guess it was a way for me to emphasize my Danishness and show respect for Norway at the same time! (I don’t remember how I first learnt about the flag [the Internet in its very first days?], but I was hugely disappointed when I hazardly discoverd the Orcadian flag on an envelope some years ago…) Pr’aps I should make a nordensflag.dk/nordensflagg.no/nordensflagga.se etc. website one day. Sure more people would use the flag, if they knew it(s history). Bab from the eo:wp
Yellow cross on red
[edit]..is said in the article to be used by finland-swedes, but i've never heard, nor seen of any such usage. On the other hand, such a design is widespread as the flag of Skåneland. Someone should investigate and correct this... (you can reach me as flinga on svwiki.)
NS vs. Orkney flag
[edit]I don't see the big fuss here. The NS flag is never displayed in Norway (other than on old black and white clips in documentaries perhaps). It is not recognised by most Norwegians and therefore not by most non-Norwegians either I believe. The proportions are different, the colours are different shades and the Orkney flag has the exstra blue colour that really sticks out and makes this a very different flag. The orkney flag gives connotations to the Norwegian national flag, but not the NS party flag. Inge 11:00, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
- I agree completely. This paragraph is not needed. The new flag looks a lot like the Norwegian flag, but very little like the flags mentioned in the article. I would change it to discuss how it differs from the Norwegian flag instead. -- Nidator 13:17, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- I have edited the article now, to put the issue of resemblance into more perspective. -- Nidator T / C 23:31, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
- Besides that most people will relate red+yellow with Skåneland and possibly Swedish Finns. Personally I had no idea that the NS had a red+yellow cross flag (perhaps due to lack of colour photographs?). I think it looks good. Makes me think of Norway and Denmark a lot - and Scandinavia in general. (Dylansmrjones - not logged in) 83.89.18.251 (talk) 19:26, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Flag of Orkney vs Orkney Flag
[edit]This is the first time I've ever heard of the "Flag of Orkney". In Orkney it's called the "Orkney Flag". Should this entry be amended to reflect the common (correct?) usage. Selkie25 (talk) 14:22, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- In English "Flag Of..." is the correct form. It may not be the local name, but you can see it this way: "Dannebrog" is the "Flag of Denmark". The "Orkney Flag" is the "Flag of Orkney". Does that make sense? Dylansmrjones (talk) 09:41, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, "Flag Of..." is the standard for these kinds of articles. -- Nidator T / C 07:52, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
The "Orkney flag" song
[edit]The issue of the supposed similarity with the "Quisling flag" has already been adequately covered in the article, so I'm sceptical towards quoting that song in full. Is that really warranted? I would vote for reverting. -- Nidator T / C 13:00, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Agreed. What if somebody pens a response to such, do we include that also? Must every item regarding the flag in 'The Orcadian' be referred to here? The 'new' flag has a status that its predecessor flag does not, and the fact that it has both detractors and supporters is neither here nor there. Revert. Rab-k (talk) 13:16, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- I have removed the song. Not notable and not needed.Inge (talk) 13:39, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
