Problems with First Steps (1947 film) information
[edit]I've done some recent work on this film article and after screening the film numerous times, I've found some problems with the information that was originally in the article. First of all, it appears to be a United Nations Film Board work, and was shot AFAIK, entirely in the United States at a summer camp in New York State, not India. The doctor in charge of medical care was likely from India but that is the only connection I can make to India. Please check over the article to see if I am right. I have also added more detail to the individuals involved in the production, see the Infobox. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 16:21, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hi. It's best if we discuss this here in a central location. Yes there does seem to be some kind of mix up. The NFB Collections page lists three awards 30 years after the release of this 1947 film -- and doesn't mention the most important award that the 1947 film won, the Oscar! Is it possible these are two different films with the same title. Or perhaps there was some kind of rerelease. But the strangeness around awards coupled with the differences in subject matter are confusing. Is IMDb any help? Shawn in Montreal (talk) 16:38, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hmm, IMDB lists a different person as director. 16:41, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- No, here's the film. The article is correct, in terms of director and IMDB (which is also user generated) seems wrong in that regard. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 16:44, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- I concur, IMDb can be probelmatic. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 16:50, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Still, I think you're right and the NFB archival description doesn't match the film's contents, from what I can see. This is an obscure film and there's a chance the NFB's catalogue description is just wrong. I tend to shy away from older less-known titles like this, personally. I'll put it in an invisible note till I get to talk to my sources at NFB (I know, OR at work here) FWiW Bzuk (talk) 16:53, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Great. In the meantime, should we remove IMDb from the External links if we both agree the info is flat-out wrong? I mean the NFB info is wrong, too, but this more problematically wrong, in that it has the wrong key creative credits from what we see in the film...? - Sure, lots of the stuff in the article is from the "too many cooks syndrome" anyway. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 17:14, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Nice work both on this. Thanks for taking the time to improve it. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 19:25, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, well, Bzuk has been tireless on this... I've mainly stood back and added a tweak here and there. He's on a roll! Shawn in Montreal (talk) 19:36, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Btw, the fact that the excised three 70s-era awards on the NFB webpage commence in 1976, I'm even more certain that they've been misapplied from This identically named 1976 NFB short doc. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 19:51, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
