Since that's an interesting question - I looked around (not expert at word origins....) and couldn't find the answer. I suspect it's something "found" as opposed to something "made". Wish I knew the real answer to incude in the article, though. Jjdon (talk) 21:30, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Link to German wiki
[edit]The "German" link in the left-hand navigation links to "Befund", which is "finding" in the sense of "result of an investigation" and has nothing at all in common with the little metal thingies discussed here.
