Water passage?
[edit]Hello! Where does the etymology of Billaios appear as 'water passage'? The name sounds more like a Phrygian or Bithynian version of Greek πέλλος (pellos) 'dark'. In mythology, Billaios is described as "dark-watered". Phonologically it also follows the sound changes between Phrygian and Greek. I don't see how Billaios would mean 'water passage' in any language spoken in Anatolia. Fkitselis (talk) 10:08, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
- Well I don't know the ancient languages. But what I get from the sources is this: The original name Billaios is actually a corrupt form of the compound word Paila+Tireios where paila means water passage. If you are certain that the translation is incorrect please feel free to correct it. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:21, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

- Well, the thing is that in Wikipedia we need to provide sources and that's why I added the citation needed. In what language would Billaios mean water passage? Palaic? Phrygian? Hittite? If you read http://classics.mit.edu/Apollonius/argon.2.ii.html the second book in Argonautica it says: "the Paphlagonians of Pelops yielded just as they were, even all those round whom the dark water of Billaeus breaks". Pelops means "dark face" and I think it is not a coincidence that both those names happen to be paired in that paragraph. In any case, even though I feel that the probability of Billaios being the Phrygian or Bithynian word for 'dark' is high, i wouldn't put that to the context unless I had an academic reference for it.
