I have a table of how the nations score so far but am reluctant to post yet because I am looking for clarification on a rule. My understanding (and memory from 2014) is that the scores generated by the nations can not come from competitors who did not compete in the free skate. This will affect pairs and ice dance totals. For instance does Japan use their placements in the ice dance and pairs from the Worlds, or from the 4 Continents.18abruce (talk) 17:19, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
it is hypothetically possible for totals to decrease if the points used are from a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place finish in a JGP, but even if that happens it will be at best a marginal difference. For the purposes of Olympic Qualification I reduced CAN and RUS to assuming that podium placements were scored as 191 (lowest possible senior GP points) for overall totals of 4473 and 4297 respectively. They are qualified because the 11th placed nation prior to this season (ISR) could only achieve 4215 with victories in all four Grand Prix finals. USA is likely qualified base on assumptions of who is entered in the Grand Prix events, but just by the numbers it remains hypothetically possible for eleven different nations to score over 4000 total points.18abruce (talk) 13:18, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
