Confusion in Nomenclature
[edit]- The Field of Mars Reserve is a park in Ryde adjacent to the Field of Mars Cemetery.
- The Field of Mars was a parish established by Governor Phillip. It extended from the river at Rydalmere up into the hills. Its name is preserved in the names of the reserve, the cemetery, Marsfield etc. It is the counterpart of the Field of Concord (peace) on the other side of the Parramatta River, which gave its name to the suburb of Concord, and, appropriately enough, Concord Repatriation and General Hospital.
- The Field of Mars Common was a publicly owned common within the parish. It was used for grazing, foraging, gathering firewood by local people, infamous as a haunt of bushrangers and fugitives. It's northern boundary was at Boundary Road, Pennant Hills, and Boundary Road, North Epping, and it stretched down to Hunters Hill. It wasn't subdivided until the Northern Railway Line was constructed in the 1880s. The suburbs of Beecroft, Cheltenham, and the eastern side of Epping and Eastwood were created as residential suburbs (with some small farms) out of this Common. They were not subdivided orchard land like surrounding areas.
This needs to be sorted out.--Jack Upland (talk) 23:08, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
