As of now, this article remains muddled, as per several threads above:
- Classification and the terminology used in describing it varies between the traditional system and the more modern clade-based approach, and doesn't accurately reflect the range of alternatives found in current texts.
- Much of the detail is actually only about leptosporangiate ferns; it's telling that as of now there's not a single image of a horsetail.
I don't believe that as it stands this is a B class article and I'm going to downgrade it to C, pending some more work on it. Peter coxhead (talk) 07:08, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
Can someone with botany and image editing experience
…download this image, and based on a solid, graduate or advanced undergraduate botanical texts, add English labels to this image of a fern frond—citing the original image source, and indicating the texts used for the English labeling in the description—and then reupload it, so that we can place into this article, in the anatomical section?
Please. So the article is of much greater use in linking, and for student reading. Le Prof. 71.239.87.100 (talk) 20:46, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
Christenhusz & Chase article
A recent edit, which I've undone, used this source:
Christenhusz, M.J.M.; Chase, M.W. (2014). "Trends and concepts of fern classification". Annals of Botany. 113 (4): 571–594. doi:10.1093/aob/mct299.
to say that the term "monilophyte" was "better avoided" and "[b]est to stick with the term 'fern' for this lineage." The article certainly needs to be taken into account, but Wikipedia doesn't dictate what is correct, only reports what others say and do. All three terms (pteridophytes, monilophytes and just ferns) can be found in reliable sources referring to the taxon that is the subject of the article. Some more work needs to be done to incorporate Christenhusz & Chase correctly. Peter coxhead (talk) 17:22, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
- You are correct. Paper should be presented (summarized, based on its abstract), but not promoted, because, while being a review article, it is presenting a classification paradigm that it presents as "new". It has to be left to other secondary sources, post-2014, to make clear that this has become the prevailing paradigm. Le Prof 71.239.87.100 (talk) 20:48, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
