How is Frobenius pronounced? Is it like FroBEENius or FroBENius? Don't want to sound like a moron when I have to talk about this fellow. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.208.120.38 (talk) 22:59, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Abstract vs. Permutation groups

[edit]

The article says:

One of his first notable contributions was the proof of the Sylow theorems for abstract groups. Earlier proofs had been for permutation groups.

What does this mean, exactly? By Cayley's theorem (well-known long before Frobenius) all groups can be understood as permutation groups. Does it mean that Frobenius's proof was the first that did not depend explicitly on the permutation structure? —Mark Dominus (talk) 14:56, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Any family relationship with Johann Froben, printer from Basel? (Froben signed Frobenius in Latin...) David.Monniaux (talk) 09:21, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First reference is broken

[edit]

The first reference cited no longer exists. Sorry, I don't know enough to find its substitute (if any). Mgnbar (talk) 16:05, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
