[edit]Fenelon Falls is a village, not a small town
Only Northeastern Part of the main street is called Colborne Street The west side of the Bridge is called Lindsay street. The site of the present day bridges is not chosen to save money;
a) at the time the original bridge was built it was in search of the smallest span, and this translated to economy ca 1850s. Subsequent bridges continue to be in this site for the same reason. The CPR bridge being further upstream was built later, and for different reasons.
b)the town was built around the two bridges bridge.. and so to move the main street to get a better view of the falls would be largely impractical. As well, following the building of the 1880's canal system, serious clearance issues for navigation emerged, cementing the location of the present day bridges forever, unless a major by-pass is undertaken, as in neighboring Bobcaygeon. Following the Provincial downloading of roads in the area to counties, this seems unlikely.
b) from May 25 1955 when the DHO began administering the highway until Jan 1, 1998 these bridges were administrated as King's highway 121. prior to this, they were administered by the County of Victoria. Following 1998, these bridges were administered by the Couty of Victoria until the 2001 amalgamation of the city of Kawartha Lakes.
Thus, the town fathers had nothing to do with the location of the present bridge.
- There was a discussion about building a new bridge away from the present falls position which was vetoed by them though. Brookie :) - a will o' the wisp ! (Whisper...) 07:57, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
Question: is "cottaging" in this article actually intended to refer to anonymous homosexual encounters? This is what the term "cottaging" is linked to, although I suspect it is supposed to refer only to the common practice in Canada of spending weekends or extended periods at cottages in the summer. Could someone clarify this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.255.212.132 (talk) 15:57, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
"Easily the most recognizable place in the Kawarthas?"
[edit]First of all, this needs a footnote or citation of some kind - and the old man siting on his porch on Colborne St. doesn't count. Secondly, can this even be proven? What about Bobcaygeon? Was Fenelon Falls immortalized in a Tragically Hip song? LOL. None of this matters - that statement just doesn't belong in the article so I took it out. If we want people to read these articles about smaller towns and villages we have to keep them credible and reliable. --Jkentrandall (talk) 17:45, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
