Paul Gauguin died in 1903 on "Fatu Iwa" in the Marquesas. Presumably this is the same place.--King Hildebrand 21:23, 27 April 2006 (UTC)auguid[reply]

Paul Gauguin died in Atuona, Hiva Oa in his working shed according to most sources. I am not aware of any evidence that Gauguin ever visited Fatu Hiva.

The Fatu Hiva article mentions Uia as a populated valley in the Central Eastern Fatu Hiva. I stayed in Omoa, Fatu Hiva for 5-6 weeks including a visit by foot to Hanavave in 1984. Then the valley had been deserted for years - even in Thor Heyerdahls time - in the 1940's - the Uia valley was deserted apart for a few notorious individuals as Teoti - "the last living Cannibal" (According to Heyerdahl, "Fatu Hiva - Back to Nature" (Danish title)). We actually met Teoti in 1983, an old man in a very poor state on his way to the clinic at Atuona.
