Synopsis is incorrect

[edit]

The whole synopsis is in need of rewriting. It's filled with inaccuracies and leaves me wondering if its author even read the story — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.247.97.14 (talk) 01:56, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, if this page is being done a school assignment, can you mention that here. There are some problems per Wikipedia policy with the new edits:

  • The plot is too long according to our policy on plot summaries
  • Everything except for the plot has to be cited and verified with reliable sources. I've tagged a couple of statements with "citation needed" tags to show where the citations need to go. I'm happy to help with this.
  • This paragraph had to removed because of inaccuracies:

Ernest Hemingway grew up with a confusing childhood. His parents were abusive, and his mother blamed the family for her failings as a singer. He was the only male child of his family, but his mother raised him as a girl when he was young. His father would take him on hunting trips, and it was only on these trips that he was able to dress and act like a boy. He respected his father for his skills as an outdoorsman. However, his relationship with his father was complicated, as his father suffered from depression and would eventually kill himself. At one point, Hemingway sat in a shed with his gun pointed at his father. Later in life, Hemingway was often absent in the lives of his children, except for the hunting and fishing trips he would take them on. From a young age, Hemingway had been known to wildly exaggerate the truth, and supplement his reality with his stories. His works are almost all in some respect autobiographical, including actual events from Hemingway's experience.

    • It's not encyclopedic to say he had a "confusing childhood" - that has to be attributed to a scholar, but no scholar I know of has said that
    • We're not certain that the family was abusive - but needs specific evidence from a scholarly source in the form of a paraphrase of attributed quotation
    • He had brothers
    • The family had a summer cottage; that's why his father took him hunting. It's not true that only on those trips could he dress and act like a boy
    • Huge leap of logic from his life to that of his children - do you have a source for this?
    • It's not encyclopedic to say that Hemingway exaggerated the truth unless it's verified from a source and tied in with this specific story.
    • If you want a sample to see how it should be done, see Indian Camp. That one is finished. And please put questions here, on my talkpage or on your talkpage. Thanks. Truthkeeper (talk) 03:04, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry, I'm new to editing wikipedia articles. I really should have done more research as to the proper style and format of articles. I hope that I have at this point adressed and corrected all of the issues you found with the article, such as shortening the summary and adding citations. I'm not entirely sure if I did my citations correctly, as the form was a little confusing. If theere is anything left that is incorrect, please let me know so I can avoid making such mistakes int he future. Emilyrose22 (talk) 20:11, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No need to apologize. You've done a really nice job with the fixes. The citations are confusing, but you've done them correctly. The plot summary is much better too. I have lots of information about Hemingway so if you have questions don't hesitate to ask. Truthkeeper (talk) 21:46, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
