General

[edit]
  • Add more subheadings to the Breeding & Use for Determining sections
  • Add more links to other Wikipedia articles
  • Add to the talk page what additions you made

Chemical Alarm Signal

[edit]
  • Grammar:
    • Add a comma before "which" ("releases the alarm substance, which...")

Breeding

[edit]
  • Grammar:
    • Add a comma before "and" in the first sentence
    • Add a comma after "includes" ("the eggs by the male includes...")

Edits/Comments

[edit]
  • I would definitely try to add more sections and split up the larger sections, like the one for breeding. It would help improve the flow of the article and not have a wall of text
  • Along with that, adding more transitions would also be nice in helping the flow of the article
  • Perhaps add more links to other articles, such as spawn (biology) for “spawning” or adding more links to the other fishes mentioned in the article
  • Edited some grammar and sentences in the breeding section
  • Also added transitions within that section
  • Definitely needs more references for all the information under breeding, although I’m not sure if it’s just my computer acting up
  • Overall, a good start to the article but it could definitely be polished up with additional sections, links, and references. Good job!

1) "Mechanical damage to these club cells, like in a predator attack, releases the alarm substance which can be detected by other ostariophysan fishes who then engage in anti-predator behaviors, like hiding under cover and dashing away." --> "The alarm substance is released upon mechanical damage to these club cells due to a predator attack, and can be detected by other ostariophysan fishes who then engage in anti-predator behaviors such as hiding or dashing away."

2) "Also, alarm substance ingested by the predator acts to chemically label the predator as dangerous to naïve fathead minnows, thereby resulting in learned predator recognition by the fathead minnows." --> "Also, alarm substance ingested by the predator will chemically label it as dangerous to naïve fathead minnows, thereby resulting in learned predator recognition."

3) "In choosing a nest site, the newly reproductive male fathead minnow tends to take over the nest site of a parental male by evicting the resident male rather than occupying an empty one. Also, when given the choice between unguarded nest sites, they will usually pick the one already containing eggs." --> "In choosing a nest site, the newly reproductive male fathead minnow tends to take over the nest site of a parental male and evicting its resident rather than occupying an empty one. 4) "The new male will care for the old male’s eggs, and this is called allopaternal care." --> "The new male will care for the old male’s eggs, a behavior called allopaternal care."

5) "This has been shown to increase the survivability of the eggs, probably because the newer male is more fit and better able to protect them than the former male." --> "This has been shown to increase the survival of the eggs, probably because the newer male is fitter and better able to protect them than the former."

6) "The cost of allopaternal care, caring for another male’s eggs, is relatively small because fathead minnow eggs hatch in about 5 days, while they can maintain a nest for about 3 to 5 weeks meaning that only a small proportion of the eggs that the male fathead minnow takes care of will ever have been adopted." --> "The cost of allopaternal care is relatively small because fathead minnow eggs hatch in about five days, while the males can maintain a nest for about three to five weeks; thus, only a small proportion of the eggs that the male takes care of will ever have been adopted."

Great Work! Here are a few suggestions for improvement: • Include more citations in the introduction • On the same subject, be sure to cite your sources in the manner that Wikipedia expects: providing a source right after a sentence with the information you are citing, rather than at the end of a long section. Even if the entire section comes from the same source, I believe the correct way to format citations is to include the citation multiple times throughout the paragraph. • I changed “Their tolerance in environmental conditions, characteristics of their life history and their popularity as bait species contribute to their widespread distribution” to “Their tolerance for multiple environmental conditions, characteristics of their life history and their popularity as bait species contribute to their widespread distribution.” • I think the “Habitat” and “Distribution” sections can be combined • I changed he capitalization in the header “Use for Determining Toxicity of Chemicals to Aquatic Animals” to “Use for determining toxicity of chemicals to aquatic animals” because Wikipedia only wants sections titles to have the first word capitalized. However, I am not sure how much I like this title in general. Maybe you should consider shortening it? Claire.Edelman (talk) 20:03, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The general format of other GAs seems to be:

  • Intro
  • Taxonomy and pylogeny
  • Description
  • Distribution and habitat
  • Biology and ecology
—Most ecology-related stuff seems to be in here (e.g. diet, mating, etc.)
  • Human interaction

Specific suggestions, descending from the top:

  • Introductory paragraph should be expanded to include information throughout the article
  • link freshwater fish
  • link or describe bait bucket releases
  • link xanthic
  • Is that correct usage of Schreckstoff? I.e. should it be Shreckstoff signal? Perhaps: “… producing a Schreckstoff distress signal.”
  • Physical description should be Description
  • link dorsal fin
  • link nape
  • link breeding tubercles
  • add a picture showing the description.
  • Remove the picture of North America. This doesn’t really have much to do with the article if it doesn’t have a distribution overlay
  • link North america
  • link Chihuahua
  • link Mexico
  • link Maritime Provinces
  • link Great Slave Lake
  • link dranage
  • link Canada
  • link Atlantic
  • link Pacific
  • link basins
  • link bait species
  • link turbid
  • link epidermal
  • link club cells
  • link northern pike
  • Third sentence in Breeding needs work.
  • link allopaternal
  • link dorsal
  • link mucus
  • link aerates (maybe)
  • removing of diseased eggs should be removal of diseased eggs
  • The sentence I am referring to above is pretty confusing.
  • The sentence after that must be clarified. Is it your conjecture or someone else’s? If the latter is true, then clarify that. If the former is true, then remove it.
  • continual > continuous
  • link epidermal
  • Why is epidermal thickness notable?
  • Why are tubercles notable? What are tubercles?
  • Celsius is capitalized unnecessarily (I think). Either way, notation should probably be XºC, rather than X degrees Celcius.
  • link fractional spawners
  • Your description of fractional spawning makes it seem as if spawning around 18ºC means it’s a fractional spawner. Your causation/definition should be turned around
  • ”Use for determining …” could probably be moved to a “Human interactions” section. The content about aquarium trade should be in that section
  • All internal links should be formatted as [[text]], rather than [url text], as the latter are treated as external links. If you look at your article render, those links have a padlock next to them. E.g. oestradiol should be formatted as [[oestradiol]], rather than [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oestradiol oestradiol].
  • link effluents, steroidal, plasma, testicular, somatic
  • You cite “normal behavior” in the event of low pH, then cite stress behaviors. Clarify.
  • link turgidity
  • link or describe cattle feedlot effluent
  • This last paragraph seems to be a restatement of what you’ve already written
  • Importance to humans should probably be “Human interactions”
  • link Arkansas
  • link breeding farms (to fish breeding farms)
  • link toxicology, EPA, vertebrate, Europe, trout, eel
