Pronunciation of name
[edit]I see that this is given in the article as [ˈfani ˈxmeːlaʁ]. I have listened to several recordings and I am hearing [ˈfani ˈʃmeːlaʁ] or [ˈfani ˈçmeːlaʁ], but I am not hearing [ˈxmeːlaʁ]. As she is from southern Germany, I imagine she herself may very well say [ˈʃmeːlaʁ], but no doubt the standard German pronunciation would be [ˈçmeːlaʁ]. Is there a native German speaker with a knowledge of phonetics who could give a ruling on this? LynwoodF (talk) 15:33, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
I have found this on YouTube. It sounds like a [ç] to me. Does anybody else think so? LynwoodF (talk) 11:11, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- Her surname is Czech and means something related to hops. It would end in ř (and since she is female -ova too, so she would be Fanny Chmelařová) However, there is no chance it would be pronounced the Czech way in Germany since Czech ř is impossible to pronounce. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Splenius (talk • contribs) 18:29, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for the information, Splenius. I must say I was puzzled by the name, which does not look at all German. So in Czech the name would start with the phoneme [x], but that is irrelevant to the German pronunciation. LynwoodF (talk) 19:39, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
The Chase
[edit]I think it should be noted on the page that Chmelar has entered the pop culture lexicon due to being the subject of a question on a quiz show, and the subsequent reaction of the host. This would require some research to get original sources and some good editing to make it objective - and let's be clear, I'm not gonna do it coz I don't care about sports or quiz shows - but here's a video discussing The Chase. Start at the 5-minute mark for the relevant bit. Be warned, there's NSFW language in the video. - 24.222.180.41 (talk) 15:07, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- In the past there have been references to The Chase, but there have been complaints about them. Anybody editing the source will find this message:
- WARNING TO EDITORS:
- Please do not add anything related to the game show "The Chase".
- Whilst Wikipedia is not censored, it is too trivial and non-encyclopaedic.
- Any such edits will be reverted instantly and reported in serious cases.
- Thank you.
- I don't know who put it there, but I get the point. LynwoodF (talk) 18:24, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- @LynwoodF Ms Chmelar has tonight appeared on UK prime time television with Bradley Walsh, in a piece all about the infamous The Chase piece. I think this completely debunks any warning about mentioning it. 87.114.59.38 (talk) 19:37, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
- I support this directive but I agree that I won't be the one to add it because I don't know where these sources are HaapsaluYT (talk) 01:54, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
I think the Chase should be included in the page- it is a fact and any reference to it shouldn't be automatically deleted. Let's have a referendum on it.
- But think about poor Fanny. Must be embarrassing. Still, it raises her profile! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:1028:8382:8046:1821:624B:F58B:3A66 (talk) 18:19, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Why is any reference to The Chase not allowed on this page, it's something she is well known for. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.30.211.111 (talk) 01:11, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
- It is a trivial matter and is seen by some as offensive to a serious sportswoman. LynwoodF (talk) 10:31, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
- It's still funny though 51.52.118.61 (talk) 12:29, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
Chmelar is a household name in Britain because of The Chase incident and it's what she is best known for. Makes no sense to not allow mention of this fact. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.39.43.106 (talk) 13:38, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
The Chase is mentioned on the German Wikipedia page for Fanny Chmelar. While it shouldn't undermine her career, it is something she is quite obviously known for in the UK – if you put her name into Google, the first page has several articles about it. Wikipedia is full of trivial information and I fail to see why it shouldn't be included. Thegeordieman (talk) 13:12, 21 May 2022 (UTC)
It's unlikely that Fanny would have an entry on English language Wikipedia had it not been for "The Chase" incident. Let's get real. Willemslie (talk) 04:21, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

- I could get behind including it if there was more in the article about her career, per WP:BLPBALANCE. The German Wikipedia has the right idea - six paragraphs about her alpine stuff, one about The Chase.--Launchballer 20:58, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
I think stuff about The Chase is probably notable enough now, given that Chmelar herself is aware of the Internet meme, has publicly acknowledged it, and has appeared on an episode of Michael McIntyre's Big Show meeting Bradley Walsh in person (see here). I don't know how much more notable it has to get for it to be valid on the article, and quite frankly, keeping up stringent demands not to mention The Chase on the grounds of notability or crudeness is quite simply a power trip on the part of this page's watchers.
