Cover?

[edit]

Does anyone know if the first track on Bathhouse Betty is a cover version of this Song of Bernadette? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Xiner (talkcontribs) 02:34, 10 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

It’s not a cover. A cover is a recording intended to COVER, mask, hide, commercially obliterate, another recording (hence the name), whereas Midler’s recording of the song was not even released as a single. It works like this: Royalties for songwriter contributions are set by the federal government at a fixed very low rate, such that it is almost impossible to make a living as a songwriter on royalties alone. The law also stipulates that anyone can record a song after it has been published or commercially recorded as long as he pays the fixed rate, but no one can record an unpublished, unrecorded song without express permission from the writers. This is why professional writers always demand a large one-time fee in exchange for the first recording. Consequently, it was once fairly common and unethical practice for a singer to re-record a song starting to make its way up the charts, squelching its progress free of charge. ~~~ TheScotch (talk) 17:38, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Jennifer Warnes-Famous Blue Raincoat (album cover).jpg

[edit]

Image:Jennifer Warnes-Famous Blue Raincoat (album cover).jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
