[edit]Edit by Btthus (only three contributions) deleted sourced material and replaced it with a long mass of text from a 2003 IRIN article (although it gave no source). I have replaced source material and added more information. --BoogaLouie (talk) 19:51, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
Army of 20 million
[edit]There is no actual source to back up the claim that Khomeini demanded an increase in fertility in order to create an army of 20 whatever. This is a claim that is attributed by authors to each other, but no actual primary source exists. Thats' because one of Khomeini's statements about the desireability of the Basij was twistted into a pro-natalist policy claim.
Furthermore the totally specualtive language about what "may have"resulted is not appropriate. The fact is that IRan's rate of fertility was a constant at about 6-7 since before the revolution and then dropped after around 1984 -- that's all the actual data actually shows. Any effort to trt to tie that to the government by Wikipedia editors is not appropriate and is your own views
During the Iran-Iraq war ... Ayatollah Khomeini pushed procreation to bolster the ranks of "soldiers for Islam," aiming for "an army of 20 million
Ayatollah Khomeini talked about the "army of 20 million" when the youth's population of Iran was about 20 million; and he meant that all of the youth want to defend their country, and if it is needed they will be a soldier of Islam.
He said: "اگر کشوری با بیست میلیون جوان که دارد، بیست میلیون تفنگدار داشته باشد، بیست میلیون ارتش داشته باشد، چنین مملکتی آسیببردار نیست" Translated: If a country that has twenty million young people, does have twenty million military/army, such country will not get damaged/defeated. [[1]]
So, the quoted text is wrong, I'll edit it soon. --Seraj (talk) 08:30, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
New, related article being developed
[edit]We are two students at Mills College enrolled in a Politics of Developing Nations course. As a course requirement we are creating a new Wikipedia article related to developing nations. Our intended article will address the family planning program in Thailand. We were inspired by Thai leader Mechai Viravaidyma’s contributions to raise greater awareness of this program. In the Wikipedia article, we intend to concentrate on how this program has addressed poverty issues. Here are some of the topics we plan to explore:
- The reason for creating a family planning program within a developing nation
- What specific social conditions existed that demanded a family planning program
- An unbiased analysis of this program’s effectiveness
- Include independent data, reports and analysis to validate claims of success and program purpose
- How a multifaceted program was so successful in a developing country
- Where the initiative to develop this program stemmed from
- Expand and include more recent information
- How has the program progressed and how has it influenced today’s society in Thailand
- What (if any) sectors of the program may be expanded
- Whether there are populations that it has not been successful in reaching
- Whether this program could be a potential model for other developing nations to mirror
Themes/subtopics within the article:
- Poverty reduction (its relation to other subtopics)
- HIV/AIDS reduction
- Mortality rate
- Child mortality rate
- Entrepreneurship
- Religious support
- Political/military support
- Women’s rights/equality issues
- Education
- Community building
- Financial funding
- International support
- And others
